Preparing for a laser hair removal session is essential to ensure a safe and effective treatment experience. Laser hair removal offers a long-lasting solution to unwanted hair, and proper preparation can contribute to optimal results and minimal discomfort. If you’re considering undergoing laser hair removal, here are some important steps to take before your session:
Direct sun exposure can increase the risk of complications during laser hair removal. The laser targets the pigment in the hair follicles, and tanned or sunburned skin can be more sensitive to the laser’s energy. It’s advisable to avoid sun exposure, tanning beds, and self-tanning products for at least four to six weeks before your treatment. If you have unavoidable sun exposure, make sure to use broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF to protect your skin.
On the day of your laser hair removal session or the night before, shave the treatment area thoroughly. Shaving ensures that the laser’s energy is focused on the hair follicles below the skin’s surface, rather than being absorbed by the hair above the skin. However, avoid waxing, plucking, or any hair removal method that removes the hair from the root, as this can interfere with the laser’s effectiveness.
Products that can sensitize the skin, such as retinoids, glycolic acids, and alpha hydroxy acids, should be avoided in the treatment area for a week or two before your session. These products can make your skin more sensitive to the laser’s energy and increase the risk of adverse reactions. Consult with your practitioner about which skincare products are safe to use leading up to your treatment.
