What Is Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction surgery at DrSkin Med Spa, medically referred to as a reduction mammoplasty, offers transformational relief for individuals with very large breasts seeking to improve their appearance and quality of life. Breast reduction surgery not only aims to reduce the size of the breasts but also creates a more aesthetically pleasing breast shape. In addition to improving physical discomfort and posture, breast reduction can also make activities like walking, running, and lifting easier, enabling patients to enjoy a more active lifestyle.

Weight fluctuations, genetics, pregnancy, hormonal changes, and some forms of medication can all play a role in a woman’s breast development. While full breasts are associated with femininity and sensuality, those with breasts that are too large in proportion to the rest of their bodies often face discomfort and a variety of physical and emotional concerns. Overly large breasts can cause strain on the back, shoulders, and neck and make shopping for clothes and bras difficult. In extreme cases, large breasts can also cause problems with posture and mobility. What is even more concerning is disproportionate breasts can be the source of many individual’s self-consciousness and embarrassment.

Breast reduction is one of Dr. Jaiswal’s most popular surgical procedures. Having performed thousands of cases during his career, patients seek his unparalleled skill and compassionate care. Each patient’s case is tailored to reflect their aesthetic goals and overall well-being.

His patients often report seeking a breast reduction to help alleviate the following:

  • Excessive drooping or sagging of the breasts

  • Shoulder, neck, or back pain

  • Indentations on the shoulders caused by bra straps

  • Inability to wear certain clothing, dresses, or bathing suits

What to Expect During Your Phoenix, AZ Breast Augmentation Consultation?

During the consultation process and other preoperative visits, our main objective is to help you make important decisions regarding your breast reduction surgery, including the eventual size of your breasts, so that we can satisfy your specific needs and meet your ultimate goals.

When you arrive for your initial complimentary consultation at DrSkin Med Spa, you will be greeted by one of our providers, who will guide you through our detailed, hands-on process.

Your provider will lead you to a private treatment room to discuss your concerns surrounding the appearance of your breasts. Your clinician will educate you about breast reduction options and other possible treatments while answering your questions and concerns. You will have a chance to discuss different breast reduction methods, including their advantages and disadvantages, the procedural process, and what to expect during your recovery.

Then, your provider will take photographs and measurements for your file, provide a list of potential surgical fees, and answer any follow-up questions. Your file will be shared with Dr. Jaiswal, who will review all aspects of the procedure to determine your candidacy and ensure the surgical outcomes will represent your expectations.

Once Dr. Jaiswal determines your candidacy, the provider will contact you to discuss his feedback and proceed with possible next steps. Once you’ve confirmed you are ready to move forward, a formal quote is provided, and a second consultation with Dr. Jaiswal will be scheduled to dive further into your breast reduction surgical plan, expected recovery, and other details regarding your procedure.

Breast Reduction Techniques

Breast reduction can be performed using three potential techniques. The amount of excess glandular tissue, fat, and sagging stretched skin will determine which technique Dr. Jaiswal will use to create the most natural results.

Liposuction

Liposuction is a quick, minimally invasive method of conducting breast reduction that offers long-lasting results and minimal scarring. Liposuction is a viable option for those seeking minimal changes to their breast size, if the breast tissue is mostly excess fat, and if the patient has good skin elasticity.

While the breast size is reduced using liposuction, the overall shape and contour will remain the same. If you are also seeking a breast lift or modifications to the breast shape and symmetry, you’ll benefit from one of the surgical techniques below.

Vertical (Lollipop)

The lollipop breast reduction involves two incisions: one at the edge of the areola and one that runs from the lower edge of the areola down to the crease beneath the breast. While there is more potential scarring using this method, Dr. Jaiswal takes extreme care to make them as discreet as possible by concealing them into the shape of the breast itself.

The vertical incision technique is ideal for patients who need mild to moderate reduction to their breast size, or for those with noticeable sagging who would like more reshaping and lifting of the breast tissue. During a vertical breast reduction, the breasts are made narrower, lifted, and reconstructed so that the areola and nipple are moved to a more natural, youthful position.

Inverted T (Anchor)

The inverted T technique utilizes the same two incisions as the vertical technique with the addition of an incision that follows the crease underneath the breasts. While there will be more scarring, scars are well concealed by the shape of the breast.

The anchor, or T breast reduction technique allows for more tissue removal and extensive reshaping. This technique is ideal for those with significant excess glandular tissue, sagging skin, and in need of a considerable reduction in their breast size.

About Breast Reduction Surgery with Dr. Rohit Jaiswal

When you arrive at our state-of-the-art, world-class surgical facility in Gilbert, Arizona, on the day of your breast reduction, you will be greeted by a patient coordinator and taken to a private room to be prepared for surgery. Then, Dr. Jaiswal will arrive to review the details of your customized breast reduction once again. He will use a non-toxic pen to mark the specific areas on your breast where he plans to place incisions and alter your breast to your desired size.

As Dr. Jaiswal marks your skin, he will discuss his approach to your breast reduction, including where he will make the incisions, how he plans to place the breast implants, the type of dissolvable sutures he will use, any expected discomfort, and review your post-operative instructions.

Once the surgical area is thoroughly prepared, a board-certified anesthesiologist will put you into a deep and comfortable sleep. During the breast reduction surgery, Dr. Jaiswal will make an incision in the breast, allowing for excess tissue, fat, and skin to be removed and the nipple and areola to be repositioned. Your breasts will be reshaped, and the incisions will be closed. Liposuction is sometimes added to breast reduction procedures to eliminate excess fat from the armpit area. The entire process can take anywhere from 2 to 3 hours. If liposuction is used, an additional 45 minutes to an hour will be added onto the procedural time.

After the surgery is complete, your incisions will be closed, and you will be taken to a private room for recovery.

Breast Augmentation Recovery in Mesa, AZ

Once you have woken up from anesthesia and cleared by Dr. Jaiswal, you will be released to your caretaker. Dr. Jaiswal will also review the post-op care instructions with you and your caretaker to ensure you follow these instructions carefully.

Recovery from breast augmentation generally takes approximately 1 to 8 weeks; however, this varies by patient. You will likely experience 1 to 2 weeks of social downtime after the procedure and should rest for the first 7 days. During this time, any intense post-operative pain and discomfort will dissipate. Light walking is encouraged immediately after surgery to stimulate blood flow and healing factors, but only after Dr. Jaiswal says it’s safe. For the better part of the first week, your job is to sleep and rest.

After the first week, swelling and bruising will resolve, and you should feel more like yourself. You can start walking more and moving around more frequently, but you should refrain from heavy lifting or pressure on the breasts.

Most patients return to work within 2 weeks after surgery. Your sutures are dissolvable and will slowly disintegrate naturally over time. Refrain from strenuous exercises and heavy lifting during this time, but light, sedentary work is safe and acceptable.

By weeks 4 and 5, you’ll be able to start thoroughly enjoying the results of your breast augmentation. Your incisions should be fully healed, and your implants should be settling into place.

With dedication to our patient’s safety, health, and general well-being, our post-op protocol is extremely hands-on and attentive. We schedule mandatory follow-up appointments with Dr. Jaiswal and another physician on our staff the day after your surgery, weekly for one month, and monthly for up to 3 to 4 months. This protocol helps ensure successful outcomes and a comfortable, safe recovery of our patients.

Final results are usually visible within 6 to 8 weeks. Any scarring is well-concealed within the native coloration of the areolas, in the natural crease of the breast, or the fold of the armpit and will continue to fade within a year, leaving you with no visible marks or reminders of your surgery and incisions.

Phoenix Breast Reduction — FAQs

There are several criteria on which breast reduction surgery is based beyond just size. Most plastic surgeons agree that patients who have a C cup or larger may be potential candidates for surgery. Other symptoms that may indicate a need for a surgical reduction include back, neck, and or shoulder pain, poor posture, breast composition that includes sagging, drooping, and deflated breast tissue, as well as disproportionate breasts to overall body proportions. Body and aesthetic goals are also fundamental indicators in determining if this is the right surgery for you.

Yes, although highly unlikely, it is possible. Younger patients, and patients with significant glandular breast tissue may observe an increase in size post procedure if they experience hormonal changes. These changes may include menopause, pregnancy, and breastfeeding. Other factors that can impact breast tissue size post-surgery include puberty, weight changes, exercise and diet, and certain medical conditions.

There are no specific or designated weight restrictions to be a candidate for breast reduction surgery. However, weight matters and can impact outcomes. Patients with a high BMI, over 35, may be high-risk candidates, which can increase the chance of complications compared to their slimmer counterparts with a BMI below 35. Extreme weight loss post-procedure can also lead to skin laxity and excess breast skin, minimizing the final result of your breast reduction surgery. Patients are encouraged to discuss optimal body weight and a healthy lifestyle pre-procedure with our medical team, led by board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Rohit Jaiswal, during the consultation process.

Yes, physically, you may be able to breastfeed following breast reduction surgery. However, there are several factors to consider which may make breastfeeding undesirable. These include nipple sensitivity, milk production supply, and milk duct viability. It is common for nipple sensitivity to change following breast reduction surgery; patients have reported both increased and decreased sensitivity depending upon the surgical techniques employed. Nerve damage can also impact a woman’s milk duct system, making it more difficult to express milk following a breast reduction. Milk production also commonly decreases in the first several years following surgery but may increase 5 years or more post-surgery.

While the results of your breast reduction surgery are permanent, the procedure will not stop your body from aging or counter the effects of gravity. Extreme weight fluctuations are also discouraged if you want to preserve and maintain the results of your surgery. However, supportive garments, proper nutrition, and regular exercise can work successfully to minimize rebound post-procedure, regardless of age.

Walking is encouraged immediately after surgery to promote blood flow and healing factors needed to expedite recovery. Regular exercise and proper nutrition are always recommended, but following a breast reduction, your body needs time to recover from the trauma of surgery, so we encourage patients to take it slow. Patients may engage in light stretching and cardio exercises after 2 weeks. Avoid stretching your upper extremities too high or any range of motion that strains your chest muscles. Jiggling your chest can be very uncomfortable and even painful, leading to injury and potential complications. Moderate exercise is restricted from weeks 2 to 6 following your breast reduction. Patients may engage in more strenuous exercise like high-impact cardiovascular exercise and heavy lifting after week 8. It’s important to consult your plastic surgeon before starting any new exercise routine following surgery.

This depends upon the type of work you do and is considered a personal decision. Most patients prefer to take 2 weeks off when undergoing breast reduction surgery; however, you may be able to return to work after 1 week if your job is sedentary. If your responsibilities are more strenuous, you may be encouraged to take 2 to 4 weeks off. The recovery period is an important time for your body to rest, relax, and resolve the trauma and inflammation from surgery. A proper recovery will provide you with optimal results from your breast reduction.

Cosmetic breast reduction surgery is not covered by insurance. However, medical breast reduction may be covered under some insurance policies. Insurance carriers have specific requirements for coverage and reimbursement. Chronic conditions, cancer, and severe back pain due to breast size are some examples. It’s important to check with your insurer before committing to the procedure to determine your options. While neither DrSkin Med Spa nor Dr. Jaiswal accepts insurance of any kind, we are, however, happy to provide any necessary documentation required to help you obtain reimbursement from your insurance company.

Breast reduction surgery requires incisions, which may lead to scarring. Most scars fade within the first year, becoming much less noticeable. The extent of your scars is also dependent on several factors which include patient age and skin quality, the surgeon, and incision type. Dr. Jaiswal has performed over 1,000 breast reduction cases during his illustrious career and is highly trained and exceptionally skilled at concealing the size and shape of his incisions.

Yes, typically, breast reduction surgery requires nipple movement and replacement due to the removal and extraction of breast tissue that supports the nipple-areola complex. After Dr. Jaiswal removes excess skin and tissue from your breast, he will need to move and realign your nipple to a higher position so that each breast is perfectly even and symmetrical with the nipple. This means you will get a lift with your breast reduction procedure.
