Joy Chapman was born and raised in the frigid city of Minneapolis, Minnesota, within a nurturing and close-knit family dynamic alongside her three sisters. Her formative years were shaped by the harsh realities of the Minnesota winters, which ultimately instilled in her a desire for a change in environment. After enduring 17 challenging winters, Joy decided there would not be an eighteenth and sought warmer weather to continue her personal and professional development. She relocated to Arizona, a state known for its arid climate and unique natural beauty. Little did she know that this decision would set the stage for a transformative career in health and wellness.

Upon settling in Arizona, Joy decided to pursue higher education and a career dedicated to advancing human health and well-being. However, her journey was not without its complexities. The path to professional fulfillment was marked by numerous challenges, detours, and significant personal growth, all of which have shaped her approach to her current role in aesthetic medicine and wellness.

After three decades, Joy has successfully navigated the complexities of life and cultivated a fulfilling career that integrates her personal values with her professional aspirations. As a mother of three children and two dogs, Joy has always maintained a strong commitment to self-care and wellness. Over the years, she developed a unique approach to health that combined her understanding of chemistry with an acute awareness of environmental factors. Through trial and error, she refined a methodology that enabled her to maintain optimal health and vitality. This practical experience, coupled with her scientific curiosity, sparked her passion for aesthetic medicine, ultimately guiding her to seek professional certification in this dynamic field.

Education & Training

Joy’s formal educational journey began at the G Skin and Beauty Institute in Chandler, Arizona, where she completed her certification as an Esthetician. Seeking to further expand her expertise, she pursued additional training at the prestigious National Association of Laser and Aesthetics (NALA) in Scottsdale. There, she worked closely under the tutelage of Eric Jantze, a 30-year industry veteran with expertise in laser principles and aesthetics. This mentorship proved invaluable, and through rigorous study and hands-on experience, Joy earned certifications as both a Laser Technician and Laser Safety Officer—credentials that cemented her role as a highly skilled practitioner in the field.

Throughout her career, Joy has been committed to applying her knowledge and expertise to a diverse array of clients, delivering evidence-based, personalized care to individuals across all demographics. Her work, grounded in the principles of scientific inquiry and patient-centered care, reflects her belief that true wellness is a holistic pursuit. Q&A With Joy Chapman

Is there anything about your education and training that patients might find unique or interesting?

Before I began my career in the aesthetic industry, I worked in property management, which required daily face-to-face interactions, most of which were riddled with challenges. To be successful, I found myself spending a lot of time on people-centered communication techniques. Part of my job was to actively listen to people’s concerns to better understand their perspective, and then tailor my explanations to their specific needs, which ultimately made their experience with me more personalized and engaging. Today, I apply those same principles to my role at DrSkin Med Spa, because as Clinical Director, I am a leader at the practice and need to be able to understand the perspective of both patients and my team. When you understand people, you become relatable and can use that as a springboard to build long-lasting connections, collaborations, partnerships, and relationships.

What is your patient care philosophy?

Patients are more than just patients—they’re people! And I treat my people like family. I’m invested in their physical, emotional, spiritual, and financial well-being. I’m compassionate, honest, and respectful, and I provide personalized care to everyone at DrSkin Med Spa. My daily focus always starts with patient safety and privacy, treating people with dignity, and building relationships based on trust and mutual understanding.

What do you like most about helping patients?

Restoring or renewing confidence and self-esteem, making a person feel whole again, is my why! We always talk about helping people look their best, or be the best version of themselves, in the aesthetic industry, but that’s only possible when you can touch their soul and make them feel better about who they are. That has to come from within. And every day I have that opportunity, to change someone’s life and perspective—it’s truly a rewarding and uplifting experience.

What methods did you employ to accomplish your goal of becoming successful in your career?

I believe in taking calculated risks; after all, nothing ventured is nothing gained! But I also believe in myself and the people I surround myself with! If I can’t count on myself, how can anyone else?! Once I set a goal, I stay committed, and if and when I make a mistake, I always try to learn from it. It’s okay to make mistakes, but I’m not okay with making the same ones over and over. I’m also a glass-half-full kind of person. Even when the chips are down, I try to find the positive or silver lining. Too many people walk around life with a negative attitude, and that energy will undermine everything in their professional and personal life. I also make sure I take time for myself because I will get burned out if I don’t. Some people can work 24/7/365, but I need to maintain some semblance of a work-life balance. Finally, to make sure I stay on track, I always set a goal before I embark on a new challenge. I believe it’s important to write down each goal and keep track of my accomplishments as I check off the next one. Without checks and balances, I would have no way to keep elevating my goals and setting my sights higher and higher with each personal or professional achievement.

What do you like to do in your leisure time when you are not seeing patients?

When not busy with patients, I love to travel and decompress. Whether it’s hiking in Sedona for a weekend or a quick getaway to catch a Cirque show in Vegas, I can have fun in almost any environment! I enjoy fine dining, concerts, the outdoors, and plenty of adventure! Life is to be lived; I try to embrace opportunities and make the most out of each experience!

What three words best describe you?

Courageous. Patient. Thoughtful.

What mentors do you currently have, or have you had, during your career, who made a lasting impact on you?

Sara Blakely has long been one of my biggest inspirations. As a woman in business and someone whose ideas were initially rejected, she persevered and built a household brand, making her story both relatable and inspirational. The fact that she became the world’s youngest female self-made billionaire is the cherry on top and proves to me that when you want something bad enough, only you can stop you! If you want something bad enough, you go out and do it; if you don’t, you make excuses!

Why do patients choose you, and what makes you different and unique?

Patients choose me because they trust me and believe that I have their best interests at heart. I am open, honest, caring, and patient, and do not treat patients I know I can’t help. I provide clinical guidance to my patients during every facet of treatment and continually set and reinforce expectations with regard to results and clinical endpoints. If something is outside of my expertise, I’m not afraid to tell the patient and consult another clinician or physician. As a mother of 3, I am compassionate and gracious and listen to my patients to ensure their voices and concerns are heard—this applies to each treatment but also to their lives, as we get to know each other during every session. My life as a mother is focused on my kids, and my life as a provider is focused on my patients, so I bring that mindset to each consultation and treatment. What makes me unique is that I try to build and grow relationships with my patients every day, regardless of how transactional the industry, the treatments, and my competition are. Life is about people, not money, and while earning money is important, changing lives is what a legacy is built upon.
