What Is Panniculectomy Surgery?

A panniculectomy is a surgical procedure that aims to excise loose, hanging skin and fat from the lower abdomen, creating a smoother abdominal contour. The excess pannus, also known as an “apron belly” can make it difficult for an individual to maintain good hygiene and can also make certain physical activities, such as walking, running, sexual intimacy, and exercising, difficult and uncomfortable.

Genetics, age, obesity, poor nutrition, lack of exercise, and pregnancy can all contribute to a person developing excess hanging skin or fat around the lower abdomen. These changes can severely impact a person’s self-confidence, sense of self-worth, or ability to comfortably perform everyday tasks or take the necessary steps to establish a healthy lifestyle.

Panniculectomy surgery aims to remove the hanging skin and excess fat from the abdomen, creating a more naturally tucked and smoother lower stomach. A panniculectomy should not be confused with an abdominoplasty or tummy tuck because the abdominal muscles are not tightened during a panniculectomy, nor is the belly button repositioned.

At DrSkin Med Spa, we offer our patients a unique consultation and surgical experience that involves a hands-on treatment plan, state-of-the-art technology, and specially curated surgical procedures. What to Expect During Your Phoenix, AZ Panniculectomy Consultation?

When you arrive for your panniculectomy consultation at DrSkin Med Spa, you can expect to pay nothing for your appointment as all initial surgical consultations are free. You will be greeted by one of our clinicians who will be your guide through the initial process.

A clinician will lead you to a private treatment room to discuss your concerns, educate you about panniculectomy surgery or other possible treatment options, and answer any questions or concerns regarding your preferred surgery. With your permission, the clinician will take a series of photographs, along with your complete medical history, that will be shared with Dr. Jaiswal. Dr. Jaiswal will determine your candidacy for treatment and finalize the cost of your surgery.

After Dr. Jaiswal has reviewed your case, the clinician will contact you with Dr. Jaiswal’s feedback and possible next steps. Once you agree to move forward, a formal quote will be provided, and a second consultation will be scheduled between you and Dr. Jaiswal to dive further into the details of your panniculectomy, expected recovery, and other details regarding your surgery.

What Is the Difference Between Panniculectomy Surgery and a Tummy Tuck?

A panniculectomy and an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) are often confused with one another. This is understandable, considering both procedures target the same area of the body. The distinguishing factor is the goal of the surgical procedure. A tummy tuck aims to tighten the abdominal muscles that have been separated from the abdominal wall during pregnancy. Additionally, excess skin, fat, and tissue are removed to further tighten and tone the stomach.

The main goal of a panniculectomy is to address the issue of loose, sagging skin and excess fat of the pannus, the large section of skin that hangs from the abdomen, covering the genitals and thighs, and that usually follows significant weight loss or complications from pregnancy. It can also address mobility issues for those with this condition and cause uncomfortable chafing, rubbing, or infections.

The Best Candidates for Panniculectomy Surgery

Good candidates for panniculectomy surgery at DrSkin Med Spa are individuals who have excess abdominal tissue that hangs down past their underwear line and find that it often interferes with movements. This excess skin may also cause rashes, chafing, or skin breakouts due to moisture trapped in the area. The ultimate goal of a panniculectomy is to help you take your body those last few steps toward becoming the physique you’ve always envisioned.

Candidates for surgery must be in good overall health and should be at a healthy, sustainable weight. To determine whether panniculectomy is right for you, our team of experts, including Dr. Jaiswal, will give you their professional opinion and guide you through the entire process toward achieving your ultimate figure.

Preparing for Your Panniculectomy Surgery in Scottsdale, AZ

The week before your panniculectomy surgery day, Dr. Jaiswal will ask you to stop taking aspirin or any medications that contain blood thinners. He will also submit your prescription pain medications 48 to 72 hours before your surgery for you to pick up before the day of your procedure. Patients will be provided with written and verbal pre- and post-operative instructions, which will be discussed and reviewed several times to ensure mutual understanding and compliance with the details of your surgery. Patients should arrive on the day of their surgery freshly showered, clean, and free of emollients, lotions, and other creams.

What Can You Expect on the Day of Your Panniculectomy Surgery?

On the day of your panniculectomy procedure, you will arrive at an off-site, state-of-the-art, fully accredited surgical facility where you will be greeted by a clinician who will lead you to a private treatment room and begin preparing you for surgery. Once situated, Dr. Jaiswal will meet with you in the operating room to review the details of your panniculectomy. He will use a special, skin-safe pen to mark the areas where he plans to create the incisions.

As you’re being prepared, Dr. Jaiswal will discuss his approach to your surgery, including how much skin and fat he plans to remove, where he will make the incisions, the type of sutures he plans to use, any expected discomfort, and review your post-operative instructions.

Once you are fully prepped for surgery, a board-certified anesthesiologist will administer your general anesthesia, and the surgical process will begin. During a panniculectomy, Dr. Jaiswal will create an incision just under the sternum that extends down to the pubic bone. Another incision is made horizontally along the pubic bone, allowing him to remove the excess skin and fat from the desired area. The remaining skin is pulled taut and sutured together to provide a contoured and slender appearance. After the surgery is complete, your incisions will be closed, and you will be taken to a recovery room, where you will be monitored while you wake up from anesthesia.

Panniculectomy Surgery Recovery in Mesa, AZ

During your panniculectomy recovery, it’s normal for patients to experience swelling and bruising around the incisions, especially during the first week of recovery. Some discomfort can be expected but may be managed with the prescription medications provided by Dr. Jaiswal. Any pain, swelling, or bruising will continue to subside as the body heals over the next 6 to 8 weeks.

Additionally, patients will be required to wear a compression or support garment throughout their recovery process. Compression garments help reduce swelling and provide additional support to recovering tissue as the body heals.

Patients must also avoid strenuous activities for at least 6 weeks or until cleared by Dr. Jaiswal. Although strenuous activities are off-limits, light walking is recommended shortly after surgery to help encourage blood circulation and prevent clotting.

Patients should expect to take some time off work and social engagements for recovery. Most patients can return to work within 2 weeks of their surgery, provided their job doesn’t require much strenuous activity and their recovery is going smoothly.

Final results can usually be enjoyed within 90 days. Any scarring is well-concealed below the underwear line and will continue to fade over time.

Phoenix, AZ Panniculectomy FAQs

We encourage our patients to prepare a list of thorough and detailed questions they would like to discuss during their consultation so they can feel confident about making a fully educated decision. We will discuss the patient’s medical and treatment history and their panniculectomy goals. We will present all viable treatment options and make honest, personalized recommendations based on our expertise and their goals.

The results of a panniculectomy surgery are long-lasting provided the patient maintains a stable weight by following a healthy diet and exercise routine. Aging, pregnancy, and other natural body changes may affect results over time, but the improvements created during a panniculectomy procedure are generally permanent.

For panniculectomy surgery, under Dr. Jaiswal’s guidance, a board-certified anesthesiologist uses a strong, predictable, and reliable general anesthetic to put patients completely to sleep for a comfortable and pain-free procedure. After they wake up from anesthesia, continued pain medication is provided to help keep the patient relaxed and at ease.

Because panniculectomy is a major surgery, patients may experience some discomfort in their abdomen, especially in the first 3 to 7 days. Dr. Jaiswal employs special precautions to ensure every patient has the most comfortable experience possible while still producing the best possible results.

The incisions made during a panniculectomy procedure are made in discrete locations around the pubic area that are well hidden and easily concealed by the patient’s underwear or bathing suit bottoms. Although your scar may never disappear completely, DrSkin Med Spa employs the most advanced scar reduction and removal technologies and therapies available to reduce and eliminate unsightly and unwanted scarring. Many panniculectomy patients find their scars unnoticeable and well worth the results.

No, a panniculectomy procedure is not meant to be an alternative to weight loss. On the contrary, a panniculectomy procedure is best suited for individuals who have already lost a significant amount of weight and have excess skin due to their weight-loss efforts. It is a procedure that is most effective for those with a body mass index of 35 or lower and who have been able to maintain a stable weight.

Although there is no set weight that you must be at to receive a panniculectomy, having a body mass index of 35 or lower is preferred as this will reduce your risks of developing complications after surgery and improve your overall results. It is important to mention that you should be as close to your goal weight as possible before your procedure because if you continue to lose weight after your panniculectomy, this could contribute to signs of more excess skin. For most people, being within ten or fifteen pounds of your goal weight can help Dr. Jaiswal reach your aesthetic goals and produce long-lasting results.
