What Is Breast Implant Exchange?
Breast implant exchange, or breast augmentation revision, is performed to correct unsatisfactory results from an initial breast augmentation, repair complications, or improve upon the results of a previously performed breast enhancement procedure.
There are a variety of reasons why a woman might consider revision breast surgery. Even with proper planning and expert technique during a breast augmentation, complications and changes can occur, or patient preferences can change later in life, leading to the consideration of undergoing breast revision surgery.
Common reasons for a breast implant exchange include:
- Capsular contracture
- Implant deflation or leak
- Increase or decrease in breast size
- Desire to change breast implant type
- Desire to change breast shape
- Implant malposition or shifting
- Drooping, sagging, or laxity
- Irregularity of the nipple or areola
No matter your reason for wanting to exchange your breast implants, DrSkin Med Spa is a team that you can trust with your safety and desired results. We offer unique consultation and surgical experiences to our patients across Arizona and the country.

During your complimentary breast implant exchange consultation, you will have a chance to sit down with one of our clinicians for your procedural overview. Your clinician will educate you about your breast implant exchange options and address any questions or concerns that you have surrounding your breast augmentation revision. You’ll be able to feel the different breast implant types, styles, and shapes and learn the advantages or disadvantages of each one. Your clinician will also discuss the details of the procedural process and what to expect during your recovery.
Toward the end of your consultation, a series of photographs and measurements of your current breasts will be taken, and you’ll be provided with a list of potential surgical fees and answer any follow-up questions. Your provider will share your file with Dr. Jaiswal, who will determine if you are a candidate for a breast implant exchange.
Once Dr. Jaiswal has given the final approval, you will be contacted to discuss his feedback and proceed with any next steps. Once you’ve confirmed that you’re ready to proceed, you’ll receive a formal quote and attend a second consultation with Dr. Jaiswal to dive further into your breast implant exchange.
Different Reasons for Phoenix, AZ Breast Implant Exchange
Saline implant ruptures are easy to detect because a noticeable deflation occurs within one or both breasts. If a saline-filled implant breaks, the deflation of the breast is notable as the content of the implants (saline solution) is harmlessly absorbed by the body. Silicone implant ruptures are often harder to diagnose without a mammogram or MRI, making regular check-ups essential.
Implant deflation can occur as the result of trauma or capsule contracture, but most commonly it occurs without any apparent cause. It is recommended to replace the implant within a few weeks to prevent infection, and before the implant pockets scar and contract. Treatment can be as simple as removing the deflated implant and replacing it with a new one.
All women experience changes in their breast tissue after pregnancy, breastfeeding, hormonal changes, weight fluctuations, or age. The changes can create problems of excessive breast size, inadequate breast volume, laxity, or an unaesthetic shape. A breast implant exchange can help reverse these changes and allow your breasts to adapt to your body shape now.
When breast implants feel too hard or appear unnatural, it is often due to the tightening or shrinking of the pocket around the breast implant. After a breast augmentation, the body will naturally create a smooth lining around the implant called a capsule. Capsule contracture occurs if the capsule thickens and tightens around the implant, causing infections, trauma, or bleeding around the implant. If severe, it can cause great discomfort and changes in the breast’s appearance. In such cases, a breast implant exchange can help bring the patient comfort and restore their desired appearance.
After a breast augmentation, it’s possible for one or both implants to shift or scar so that the implant does not sit in the ideal position. This condition can be caused by a capsule contracture or a capsule that has stretched too far.
Symmastia results from breast implants that start to touch across the middle of the chest, creating what is known as a “uni-boob.” This is very uncommon and is mostly found in women with concave breast bones or women who have implants that are too large for their chest size. Repair can be accomplished with implant removal or exchange if the original implants are too large for the patient’s chest.
The “double bubble” refers to the formation of a crease along the lower curvature of the breast above the breast fold. This can give the appearance that the breasts are stacked on top of the implants. Possible treatments for this issue include releasing the internal tissues, repositioning the implant, or exchanging the implants for a different size or shape.
What Are the Breast Implant Exchange Options with DrSkin Med Spa?
Silicone to Saline
If you currently have silicone breast implants but are interested in switching to saline for a more customized size breast enhancement, Dr. Jaiswal can remove your current silicone implants and replace them with saline implants.
Change Implant Size
Perhaps you love your current implant type, but it’s the size of your implants that you’d like to change. Dr. Jaiswal can help you determine the size of implants that will best meet your goals while considering your safety and overall appearance.
Saline to Silicone
If you are unsatisfied with the look or feel of your current saline implants, you may want to exchange them for something that looks and feels more natural. Or maybe you’ve had your implants for over ten years and want to be proactive about exchanging them before a leak or rupture can occur. Whatever the reason, Dr. Jaiswal can switch your implants from saline to silicone in an outpatient breast implant exchange. Under general anesthesia, your current implants will be replaced with new silicone implants using the same incision points from your initial breast augmentation.
The Best Candidate for Breast Implant Exchange in Scottsdale, AZ
Ideal candidates for breast implant exchange in Arizona at DrSkin Med Spa are individuals who want to change the size, shape, or type of their current breast implants or treat a complication caused by their current breast implants.
Candidates for surgery must be in good overall health with no current medical conditions that could hinder their surgical success or recovery. To determine whether breast implant exchange is right for you, our team of experts, led by Dr. Jaiswal, will give you professional feedback and guide you through the entire process from consultation to the end of your recovery.
Preparing for Your Breast Implant Exchange
One week prior to your breast implant revision, Dr. Jaiswal may ask patients to stop taking certain blood-thinning medications, such as aspirin or ibuprofen, which interfere with the body’s ability to clot blood. Dr. Jaiswal will call in your prescriptions to your preferred pharmacy 48 to 72 hours prior to surgery so you have them in advance and ready for your recovery. Patients will be provided with written and verbal pre- and post-operative instructions, which are reviewed several times to ensure mutual understanding and compliance. Patients should wear comfortable clothing on the day of their surgery, preferably a shirt that buttons in the front, be freshly showered, and be free of perfumes or lotions.
What Can I Expect During My Breast Implant Exchange Procedure in Mesa, AZ?
When you arrive at our state-of-the-art, world-class surgical facility in Gilbert, Arizona, on the day of your breast augmentation, you will be greeted by our patient coordinator and taken to the operating room. Then, Dr. Jaiswal will arrive to review the details of your customized breast implant exchange. He will use a non-toxic pen to mark the specific areas on your breast where he plans to make the incisions, which are often in the same location as your initial breast augmentation.
As Dr. Jaiswal marks your skin, he will discuss his approach to your breast implant exchange, including general anesthesia, where he will make the incisions, how he plans to work with or around scar tissue, the type of dissolvable sutures he will use, any expected discomfort, and review your post-operative instructions.
Once the surgical area is thoroughly prepared, a board-certified anesthesiologist will put you into a deep and comfortable sleep, and Dr. Jaiswal will begin the surgical process, which generally requires 1 to 2 hours, depending on the specific nature of your breast augmentation.
The process of removing your breast implants and replacing them with new ones is more complicated than you might assume. When a device is implanted within the body, your body creates scar tissue around it that encapsulates it—this is the body’s natural way of healing and adapting to the presence of the foreign device. When having a breast implant exchange surgery, these capsules must be removed completely along with the old implants. After the old implants have been removed and the scar tissue excised, the new implants will be placed and the incisions will be closed, then you will be taken to a private room for recovery.
Breast Implant Exchange Recovery
Once you have woken up from general anesthesia and have been cleared by Dr. Jaiswal, you will be released into the care of a close friend or family member. Dr. Jaiswal will also review the post-op care instructions with you and your caretaker to ensure you follow these instructions carefully.
Recovery from breast implant exchange takes approximately 1 to 8 weeks, similar to your initial breast augmentation recovery. You will likely experience 1 to 2 weeks of downtime after the procedure and should exclusively rest for the first seven days with light walking to help with blood circulation. During this time, any intense post-operative pain and discomfort will dissipate. For the better part of the first week, your job is solely to sleep and rest.
After the first week, swelling and bruising will begin to resolve, and you should feel more like yourself. You can start walking more and moving around more frequently, but you should refrain from heavy lifting or applying pressure on the breasts.
Most patients return to work within 10 to 14 days after surgery. The sutures used are dissolvable and will slowly disintegrate naturally over time. Continue to refrain from all strenuous exercises and heavy lifting until you are cleared for activities by Dr. Jaiswal. Light, sedentary work is safe and acceptable.
Our dedication to patient safety, health, and general well-being involves an extremely hands-on and attentive protocol. We schedule mandatory follow-up appointments with Dr. Jaiswal and another physician on our staff the day after your surgery, weekly for one month and monthly for up to 3 to 4 months. This protocol helps ensure successful outcomes and a comfortable, safe recovery for our patients.
The final results of a breast implant exchange procedure are usually visible after six to eight weeks of recovery. Any scarring is well-concealed within the native coloration of the areolas, in the natural crease of the breast, or in the fold of the armpit and will continue to fade within a year, leaving you with no more scarring than that of your initial breast augmentation procedure.

Phoenix Breast Implant Exchange FAQS
What is breast implant revision surgery?
Breast implant revision, also known as breast implant removal or breast explant surgery, is a secondary surgery aimed at correcting or revising the previous, or primary breast augmentation procedure. This may involve correction of a complication like implant malposition or rupture, style preferences like upgrading implant size and technology, refreshing dated implants by exchanging them for new ones, or lifestyle changes that have impacted breast tissue like pregnancy and breastfeeding, aging, and weight fluctuations.
Is breast revision surgery easier than breast augmentation?
If breast revision surgery is performed at the same incision points and the location of insertion is identical, pain and recovery associated with the procedure are reported to be less with a shorter recovery time. This is because the incisions and pockets holding the implant were previously created and stretched.
However, if the revision requires new incision points and the insertion is performed differently than during the previous surgery, the second surgery is likely to be more difficult for several reasons. First, the surgeon must manipulate anatomical changes caused by the previous implants and stretch new, previously unstretched tissue, creating a new insertion pocket. Additionally, the presence of scar tissue can make a good result less predictable. Finally, another crucial component that determines a successful breast revision is the reason for the desired surgery; certain types of revisions are easier, more predictable, and less invasive overall.
How many breast revisions can you have?
Technically, you may have as many breast surgeries as you want to achieve the look and feel you desire. Regarding safety, there is no designated or magic number and no limit to the number of breast revision procedures a person can have. However, it is necessary to wait at least six months before seeking a revision to ensure swelling, bruising, and trauma from your previous procedure have resolved. It may also take time for your brain to adjust to the new look and feel of your new body, and the recovery process is part of this adjustment period. We specialize in breast augmentation revision surgery and can explain your options and our process in detail so that you can make an informed decision regarding surgery.
Are breast revisions common?
Breast revision surgery is a personal decision based on a variety of factors, but routinely occurs when a person isn’t happy about the size, shape, or symmetry of their breasts. The most common reason for a revision is the desire to “go bigger” to further enhance the breast. Whether saline or silicone, breast implants are not a lifetime device and have a “shelf-life” of approximately 15 to 20 years. So, revisions are common, and a second surgery is widely accepted as normal or customary. The average number of breast procedures in one’s lifetime is 2.5 per person.
What is the average cost of a breast implant revision?
Breast implant revision surgery routinely starts at $10,000 and increases when performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon. If performed by a cosmetic surgeon, the procedure is usually less expensive because the surgeon’s training, residency, experience, and overall qualifications are far less extensive. Many other variables factor into the final cost, which patients must evaluate when considering breast implant revision.
Is it cheaper to replace breast implants than the initial breast augmentation surgery?
No, typically, breast revision surgery is a similar price to the original procedure, assuming the procedure is identical to your first surgery. There are other variables to account for, however, that can make a breast implant revision more complex and individualized, which can increase the price of the procedure. Adjunct procedures like a breast lift may also be required to achieve the desired outcome, which will add to the total and final cost of your breast implant revision surgery.
How do I know when my breast implants need to be replaced?
Patients need to replace their implants if they are experiencing a leak or have ruptured implants. Another reason patients need to replace their breast implants is if they’ve developed capsular contracture, which is when scar tissue forms in the pocket around the implant, hardening to an uncomfortable degree, which causes pain, tenderness, and unevenness.
Patients more commonly replace their breast implants because they’re unhappy with their initial results or desire a change in size. Age, weight, and childbirth are significant factors in breast implant procedures and impact the long-term durability of breast implants, causing them to droop, sag, and fluctuate in size, shape, and symmetry.
What happens when breast implants are removed and not replaced?
When breast implants are removed without replacement, breasts may appear deflated and less full and hollow, depending upon the size of the implant being removed and the amount of breast tissue that remains intact. Additionally, the surrounding skin, which was previously stretched, will loosen and become saggy, droopy, and wrinkled. Other changes that may occur include chest wall concavity, puckering, dimpling, and ptosis. One option to counter these changes is to replace the artificial implant with native fat through fat grafting. This is a naturopathic option to restore volume, shape, and symmetry by extracting fat from your body and injecting it strategically into the breast tissue.
Is it painful to remove breast implants?
No, patients should not feel any pain or discomfort during the breast removal procedure. Referred to as breast explant surgery, patients will be under a local anesthetic that keeps them comfortable, numb, but awake during this 30 to 45-minute in-office surgery. However, patients should expect some mild soreness and discomfort post-procedure. The pain will subside after about a week, but tenderness may persist for several weeks.
What risks are involved with breast implant removal surgery?
At DrSkin Med Spa, breast implant removal procedures are done in-office, under a local anesthetic. Patients are comfortable and numb but awake, eliminating the possibility of complications associated with general anesthesia. However, as with any surgery, there are risks involved with breast implant removal. These include but are not limited to bleeding, infection, and scarring.
If you or a loved one is considering breast implant removal surgery, an implant revision, or are uncertain as to what breast implant procedure you need, we’re here to help. Dr. Jaiswal has performed thousands of breast rejuvenation procedures and is available to lend his expertise and provide guidance. Please use our online form to schedule a consultation with Dr. Jaiswal or call us at (480) 904-3311. We look forward to hearing from you!
Are the results of my breast revision permanent?
Breast revision surgery is a permanent procedure, and although you can expect long-lasting results, the surgery doesn’t stop the process of aging. Much like the rest of your body, your breasts will continue responding to age and gravity over time. Successful breast revision surgery will restore your confidence and self-esteem, increase your happiness, and rejuvenate your figure, keeping you looking and feeling younger for longer than without surgery.
