What Causes Excessive Underarm Sweat?
Excessive underarm sweating, medically known as axillary hyperhidrosis, can arise from several different factors:
- Primary Hyperhidrosis is a condition that leads to excessive sweating without any apparent underlying medical cause and is often genetic. Triggers for this type of hyperhidrosis include stress, anxiety, and certain dietary choices.
- Secondary Hyperhidrosis is another form of excessive sweating linked to underlying medical conditions such as hyperthyroidism, menopause, and various infections. Certain medications can also induce this type of sweating as a side effect.
- High temperatures and humidity can cause your body to produce more sweat in an effort to cool down. Additionally, stressful situations and anxiety can activate sweat glands, particularly in the underarm region.
Other common causes of excessive underarm sweat include hormonal fluctuations, particularly during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause, which can contribute to increased sweating. Different foods and beverages like spicy dishes, caffeine, and alcohol can also trigger sweating in some individuals.
