What Is Buccal Fat Removal?
The buccal fat pads are a naturally occurring, walnut-sized mass of tissue located beneath the cheekbones in the hollow area of the cheeks. Although full, rounded cheeks are considered a youthful characteristic, some adults feel their cheeks make their face appear too full or chubby. In those cases, the buccal fat pads can be partially or fully removed to achieve a leaner, more sculpted facial appearance.
Buccal fat removal is designed to reduce facial fullness in the mid to lower facial range. Unfortunately, this type of fat generally doesn’t respond to typical weight loss methods such as diet and exercise. The buccal fat removal procedure is intended to create a chiseled facial shape and bring prominence to your cheekbones and jawline.
At DrSkin Med Spa, we offer our patients unique consultation and surgical experiences that are customized according to their individual goals. What to Expect During Your Phoenix, AZ Buccal Fat Removal Consultation?
Your initial surgical consultation at DrSkin Med Spa will be free of charge. Upon your arrival, you will be welcomed by your clinician who will guide you through the process.
You will be escorted to a private treatment room to discuss your concerns and goals. Your clinician will educate you about buccal fat removal and recommend any other possible treatment options. They will spend time addressing your questions and concerns regarding your preferred surgery before taking a series of photographs of your facial circumference. They will also discuss the length of your expected recovery, surgical fees, and any final questions. The provider will then share your file and photos with Dr. Jaiswal, who will determine your candidacy for treatment and finalize the cost of your surgery.
Once feedback from Dr. Jaiswal has been accrued, your clinician will contact you again to discuss your next steps. The Best Candidates for Buccal Fat Removal in Scottsdale, AZ
Good candidates for buccal fat removal are individuals frustrated by a mid or lower facial appearance that looks bloated or full due to excess subcutaneous fat. If you are constantly teased for having a “baby face” or “chipmunk cheeks,” then buccal fat removal would be an excellent solution for your aesthetic concerns.
Candidates for surgery must be in good overall health, both emotionally and physically, and have realistic expectations for what this procedure can achieve. To determine whether buccal fat removal is right for you, Dr. Jaiswal will offer his professional opinion and help guide you through this important decision.
Additionally, buccal fat removal can be particularly beneficial for individuals undergoing transitional surgery, as it helps sculpt a more defined facial contour that aligns with their gender identity. For those transitioning, achieving a harmonious balance in facial features is often an important aspect of their journey. Buccal fat removal reduces the fullness in the cheeks, enhancing the overall definition and creating a slimmer, more angular appearance. This procedure can significantly contribute to the transformation process, helping individuals feel more confident and aligned with their true selves.
What Can You Expect on the Day of Your Buccal Fat Removal Procedure?
On the day of your buccal fat removal procedure, you will arrive at DrSkin Med Spa, where you will be greeted and taken to a private operating room. Then, Dr. Jaiswal will meet with you to review the details of your buccal fat removal procedure and use a special surgical pen to mark the areas of your lower cheeks where fat will be extracted.
As Dr. Jaiswal marks your skin, he will discuss his approach to your surgery, including how much buccal fat he plans to remove, where he will make the incisions, the type of sutures he will use, any expected discomfort, and review your post-operative instructions for your recovery.
Once the surgical area is thoroughly prepared, Dr. Jaiswal will administer a local anesthetic inside your mouth, similar to that used during dental treatments. A small incision will be made on the inside of your cheek where it will remain completely hidden. Dr. Jaiswal will gently extract the buccal fat pad and trims it with a special surgical device. The incision will be closed using dissolvable sutures that will dissipate on their own over several weeks.
After the surgery is complete, you will be free to go home with a caretaker as you will not be able to drive.
Buccal Fat Removal Recovery in Mesa, AZ
A few days before your surgery, Dr. Jaiswal will call in your prescriptions for pain medications and antibiotics at your preferred pharmacy and confirm that you have picked them up. Before being released to your caretaker, Dr. Jaiswal will also review all post-op care instructions again.
While swelling is normal after surgery, you can mitigate these side effects with over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications or ice packs. Bruising is typically minor and will fade quickly. You are required to sleep with your head elevated for the first two weeks so that the cheek area is raised above your heart to help reduce swelling and encourage circulation. You will also need to eat soft foods, such as soups and smoothies, for the first few days after treatment. After about one week, most patients feel well enough to return to work and other normal activities. However, you should abstain from heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for at least 2 weeks.
Final results can be enjoyed after 6 to 8 weeks once the swelling has completely resolved. Any scarring is concealed on the inside of the cheek, leaving you with no visible marks or reminders of your surgery.

Phoenix Buccal Fat Removal FAQs
At what age should you get buccal fat removal?
Buccal fat removal, also known as buccal lipectomy, is a facial rejuvenation surgery to enhance and accentuate your natural beauty. Patients who feel self-conscious and suffer from low self-esteem about their “chipmunk cheeks” or want a more mature look may be good candidates for surgery. However, it’s important to wait until you’re at least 18 years old so your plastic surgeon can analyze your facial anatomy because the procedure can have downsides, like how your face ages. Removing your fat pads prematurely could potentially alter the shape of your face once fully grown, leaving you looking “hollowed out” as you experience natural facial fat loss later in life. To learn more about buccal fat removal surgery, please contact our medical team at (480) 904-3311 and book your complimentary consultation today!
Will buccal fat removal make my face smaller?
Buccal or cheek fat removal helps reduce fullness in your face and slims your cheeks by removing the fat pads at the bottom of your face inside the lower cheek. Your face will appear narrower and more V-shaped for a more defined, chiseled, contoured, youthful appearance.
Will my face still sag after buccal fat removal?
There are many of factors to consider that may contribute to sagging skin, like your unique facial anatomy, age, and lifestyle. As we age, we experience muscle and fat loss, soft tissue, and bone decay, which can leave more mature patients looking gaunt. Some older patients may lack skin elasticity, and in combination with the slimming effect of buccal fat removal, the surgery can accelerate the aging process. However, some patients report buccal fat removal surgery has helped them maintain a more natural, youthful, radiant appearance as they have aged. During your consultation, we encourage you to discuss your concerns and goals with our medical team, led by Dr. Rohit Jaiswal, MD, to determine the right surgery for you. Dr. Jaiswal has performed over 1,000 buccal fat removal cases during his 10-year career and will offer his expertise and insight based on your preferences and facial anatomy.
Can buccal fat grow back?
No, once the fat cells have been removed, they cannot regrow or come back. Dr. Jaiswal will extract the fat pads from your lower cheeks, making this procedure permanent and your new facial shape. The contours of your new face should last; however, buccal fat removal does not prevent weight gain or loss and doesn’t inhibit or stop the aging process, all of which can impact your results, happiness, and the long-term benefits of the surgery. Patients are encouraged to be near or at their goal weight to minimize and prevent change to their face post-surgery.
How do you sleep after buccal fat removal?
Buccal fat removal recovery requires patients to sleep at a slight incline, approximately 30 to 45 degrees, and on their back, for the first 1 to 2 weeks following surgery. It’s important to keep your head above your heart to aid in and expedite the recovery process. This sleeping position is critical to minimizing swelling and inflammation and contributing to effective lymphatic drainage, which promotes healing and reduces superficial bruises.
Does buccal fat affect the jawline?
Yes, buccal fat removal highlights your cheekbones. It accentuates your jawline, creating a narrower V-shape while reducing fullness at the bottom of your face for a more defined, chiseled, and complete facial rejuvenation.
Does buccal fat removal leave a scar?
No, buccal fat removal does not leave a scar. All incisions are made along the inside of your cheeks and in the mouth. This area is referred to as the oral mucosa. Dr. Jaiswal uses dissolvable sutures that disintegrate over time, leaving no visible marks on your skin. Inside of your mouth, once dissolved, the sutures and incisions fade away during the recovery and healing process.
Is buccal fat removal surgery permanent?
Once the fat pad has been removed, it will not grow back. Therefore, the surgery is permanent, as are your results. However, buccal fat surgery does not prevent you from gaining or losing weight and cannot slow or stop aging. All of these variables can impact your results both in the short and long term. Patients are encouraged to be at, or close to, their desired weight, as extreme weight fluctuations are discouraged post-procedure.
How long does it take to see results from buccal fat removal surgery?
In general, most surgeries can be considered final after 6 to 12 months. In the case of buccal fat removal surgery, patients can expect to see results in 8 to 12 weeks once swelling and inflammation have resolved. The incisions from your surgery will heal in 4 to 6 weeks, and most patients can expect little to no social downtime, with some patients returning to work as quickly as 2 to 4 days following surgery.
How do I know if I am a good candidate for this procedure?
Individuals seeking to enhance their jawline and create more definition and contour along the junction bridging the jaw and cheeks are excellent candidates for buccal fat removal. Patients with a rounder face, chubby cheeks, or disproportionate facial balance may be considered good candidates for this procedure. Transgender patients seeking facial feminization may also be excellent candidates for buccal fat removal surgery. Patients must be mentally stable, in good physical health, and maintain realistic expectations.
