What is an Exfoliating Peel?

Exfoliating peels do exactly as the name states—they peel away layers of dead skin to reveal the gorgeous you beneath. The outermost skin layer is often dull and damaged. By shedding those dead skin cells, the healthier cells underneath can shine.
At DrSkin, we use only the most gentle of peels. The ingredients interact with your skin and form little grains that can be scrubbed away. The buffing process helps remove the top layer of skin without causing any damage or pain.

What To Expect From an Exfoliating Peel
On the day of your appointment, the DrSkin team will get you checked in and go over any questions you may have about the process. Once we are ready to begin, you will be asked to lie face up. Your skilled technician will apply a layer of the exfoliating peel to your skin and will stay with you to make sure everything goes as planned as the peel dries.
During the application and drying process, you may feel some tingling or burning, due to the acids present in the formula. However, this should not be too painful. If you are worried about your sensitive skin reacting poorly, don’t worry. There are a variety of peels out there for you to try, and we can always offer alternatives.
To make your treatment go all the more smoothly, consider the tips below.
Pre-Treatment Tips
- Wear SPF before your treatment to protect your skin from sun damage.
- Avoid exfoliating the area to be treated.
- Do not wax, use a depilatory cream, or undergo laser hair removal at least 1 week before your appointment.
- Stay hydrated.
- Do not use facial masks, self-tanning products, Retin-A, or any prescription skincare 3 days before your treatment.
Post-Treatment Tips
- Moisturize your skin and stay hydrated.
- Do not pick or rub your skin.
- Avoid any skincare products for at least 4 hours after your peel. Gentle cleansers are recommended for the first week.
- After 6-7 days, you can resume your skincare regimen.
- You will notice some sensitivity, so avoid glycolics, exfoliating products, and retinol for about 7-10 days.
- Wear SPF all the time! Do not use self-tanners or tanning beds for at least 2 weeks post-treatment.
- No sweat-inducing activities for 72-96 hours.

Is There Any Downtime?
There is a reason we call it a peel! You will be shedding some excess skin after your treatment, and so you may not want to return to the office right away. It is recommended that you plan around this treatment. Give yourself at least an evening to recover, since you will need about 4 hours to let the treatment do its work before returning to your usual routine.
Around 24 hours after the treatment, you will start noticing signs of exfoliation. Peeling starts around the third day and ends by the seventh.
Who is a Good Candidate For an Exfoliating Peel?
Most people are able to get an exfoliating peel. Even individuals with melasma and keratosis pilaris can receive this treatment.
