What Is Blepharoplasty Surgery?

Blepharoplasty, also referred to as an eyelid lift, is a corrective surgical procedure that reduces excess skin, skin laxity, bagginess, and fatty deposits in the upper and lower eyelids to improve vision and enhance aesthetic upper facial balance for a more youthful and revitalized appearance.

Gravity, environmental stressors like the sun, air pollution, and harmful chemicals found in food and water, as well as the natural signs of aging, present in a myriad of ways around the eyes, including saggy skin, puffiness, sullen or heavy eyelids, and fine lines. These changes can hinder a person’s eyesight and make patients feel as if they look tired, aged, and even angry. Blepharoplasty procedures, including upper and lower eyelid surgery, are designed to target and combat these common signs of aging around the eyes and restore them to look and function their best.

Upper & Lower Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery is one of Dr. Jaiswal’s specialties, and he’s performed thousands of cases during his illustrious career. In his highly experienced hands, a blepharoplasty will:

  • Turn back time by reducing wrinkles and fine lines caused by ptosis around the eyes

  • Improve vision quality by removing obstructions and enhancing overall eye function

  • Deliver natural-looking plastic surgery results by lifting and tightening the appearance of sagging or drooping upper eyelids

  • Restore a youthful appearance by addressing excess skin, fat, dark circles, puffiness, under-eye bags, and sagging tissue from the lower eyelids

What to Expect During Your Eyelid Surgery Consultation in Chandler, AZ?

Eyelid surgery is a blanket term for cosmetic eyelid lift procedures that aim to correct the signs of aging around the eyes and the upper one-third portion of the face. When you arrive for your initial consultation at DrSkin Med Spa, you can expect to pay nothing for your appointment, and all initial surgical consultations are free of charge. You will be greeted by one of our clinicians, who will guide you through this process.

The provider will take you to a treatment room to discuss your concerns, educate you about your preferred procedure and other possible treatment options, and answer any questions or concerns regarding your preferred surgery. The provider will then take photographs, discuss your expected recovery, surgical fees, and answer any final questions. The provider will then share your photos with Dr. Jaiswal, who will determine your candidacy for treatment and finalize the cost of your surgery.

The provider will then contact the patient with feedback from Dr. Jaiswal and possible next steps. Once the patient agrees to move forward, a formal quote will be provided, and a second consultation will be scheduled with Dr. Jaiswal to dive deeper into your surgery, expected recovery, and other details of your procedure.

The Different Types of DrSkin Med Spa Eyelid Lift Surgeries

Depending on the needs and desired plastic surgery results of each individual patient, eye rejuvenation can consist of upper blepharoplasty, lower blepharoplasty, or a combination of the two. DrSkin Med Spa also proudly offers Asian eyelid surgery for patients seeking and desiring a more Westernized-looking eyelid lift. Dr. Jaiswal employs highly specialized and advanced artistic techniques to create this look and appearance. Adjunct procedures, such as a brow lift and deep plane facelift, often accompany eyelid surgery to further enhance facial balance.

Upper Blepharoplasty

Upper blepharoplasty focuses on the removal of sagging skin or excess tissue along the upper eyelids, promoting the natural shape of the upper lid, fully rejuvenated and restored. Dr. Jaiswal artistically contours the upper eyelid with the eyebrow and lash line in mind, forming a golden ratio resulting in a revitalized, youthful, and confident appearance. By removing the hooding of excess skin around the upper eye, patients report improved vision and more eyelid platforms, making eye makeup application easier.

During upper blepharoplasty, Dr. Jaiswal will make a small, discreet incision in the upper eyelid crease to access and remove the extra skin and excess tissue. This surgical technique makes scarring virtually undetectable. Dr. Jaiswal is extremely inept at performing upper blepharoplasty as an in-office procedure, meaning you’ll be awake but thoroughly numb and comfortable with a local anesthetic.

Lower Blepharoplasty

The lower blepharoplasty focuses on correcting puffiness or eyebags underneath the lower eyelid and blends the junction between the lower lid and cheek. This procedure can also tighten the lower lid.

During a lower eyelid lift, Dr. Jaiswal must confront weakened and potentially stretched-out low eyelid muscles, excess skin compromising appearance, prolapsed fat that creates visible bags and puffiness, and cheek dissent. This requires Dr. Jaiswal to consider a variety of surgical approaches and advanced techniques to deliver the safest treatment while maximizing patient outcomes.

Dr. Jaiswal will carefully and strategically remove fat and excess skin to help tighten the area, remove dark circles, and seamlessly bridge the junction between the lower lid and cheek for a naturally smoother, uniform, more youthful result. Dr. Jaiswal performs lower blepharoplasty in-office and outpatient, so patients have options if they prefer to be awake during this surgery. When performing lower blepharoplasty surgery in an OR outpatient setting, Dr. Jaiswal offers patients a totally scarless result by utilizing state-of-the-art surgical techniques that take years to perfect.

Upper and Lower Blepharoplasty

Both upper and lower blepharoplasty can be performed simultaneously, in-office, awake, and comfortably numb, or outpatient under anesthesia during a single surgical procedure for full, comprehensive eye rejuvenation. This combination addresses issues concerning the upper and lower lids for more dramatic and cohesive plastic surgery results.

Asian Eyelid Surgery

The anatomy of the Asian eyelid is very distinctive and quite unique from that of their Western counterparts. Referred to as double eyelid surgery, this eyelid lift procedure has rapidly become one of the most popular procedures in Asian communities throughout the United States. An ethnic blepharoplasty, as it is often referred to, adds a pretarsal crease in the upper eyelid. For patients born with monolids, this type of blepharoplasty utilizes subtle enhancement techniques to create a crease in the eyelid, giving patients a more awakened and refreshed final appearance.

Asian eyelid blepharoplasty is performed for the same cosmetic improvements but maintains the distinctive cultural Asian appearance. Highly advanced and specialized techniques are employed to create a more Westernized-looking eyelid for those patients who desire this look.

Patients who are unhappy with the aged, tired, or angry appearance of their eyes due to excess tissue, fatty deposits, puffiness and eye bags, dark circles, drooping skin, or fine lines and wrinkles are excellent candidates. The goal of eyelid surgery, as with all procedures and treatments, is to give patients a new sense of self-confidence and to restore the natural look that they had in their youth by correcting imperfections and the signs of aging.

Patients will be provided with written and verbal pre- and post-operative instructions, which are discussed and reviewed several times to ensure mutual understanding and compliance. Patients should wear comfortable clothing on the day of their surgery and be free of all eyelash extensions, makeup, facial lotions, and sunscreen.

What Can You Expect on the Day of Your Eyelid Surgery in Scottsdale, AZ?

On the day of your blepharoplasty procedure, you will arrive at DrSkin Med Spa, where you will be greeted by a welcoming coordinator or clinician and taken to a private operative room. Then, Dr. Jaiswal will meet with you to review the details of your eyelid lift procedure. He will use a special pen to mark your eyelids to ensure proper placement of the incisions.

As Dr. Jaiswal marks your skin, he will discuss his approach to your surgery, including how much skin, fat, or tissue he plans to remove, where he will make the incisions, the type of sutures he will use, any expected discomfort, and go over your post-operative instructions for your recovery. He will also review his plan for local anesthesia.

Once the surgical area is thoroughly prepared, Dr. Jaiswal will administer the local anesthetic and begin the surgical process which generally requires 20 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the specific nature of your eyelid lift procedure. After the surgery is complete, your incisions are closed, and you will be free to go home with a caretaker as you will not be able to drive.

Eyelid Lift | Blepharoplasty Surgery Recovery

Prior to your surgery, Dr. Jaiswal will call in all your prescriptions and confirm that you have your medications. Before being released to your caretaker, Dr. Jaiswal will also review all post-op care instructions again.

Recovery from eyelid surgery takes approximately 3 to 14 days, although this varies by patient. You may experience social downtime after the procedure with mild swelling and bruising that lasts 7 to 10 days. The general post-op protocol involves follow-up appointments with Dr. Jaiswal and another physician on our staff the next day, weekly for one month, and monthly for upward of 3 to 4 months. With dedication to our patients’ safety, health, and well-being, we are extremely hands-on and attentive to ensure a successful, comfortable, and safe recovery period with the best possible outcomes in mind.

Final results can usually be enjoyed within 90 days. Any scarring is well-concealed within the natural eye creases and behind the lids and will continue to fade within a year, leaving you with no visible marks or reminders of your surgery and incisions.

Phoenix Eyelid Surgery | Blepharoplasty FAQS

We encourage our patients to prepare a list of thorough and detailed questions they would like to discuss during their consultation so they can feel confident about making a fully educated decision. We will discuss the patient’s medical and treatment history and their eye rejuvenation goals. We will present all viable treatment options and make honest, personalized recommendations based on our expertise and their goals.

We encourage our patients to get plenty of sleep before surgery to ensure they are well-rested. Patients must have a caregiver transport them to and from the office as they cannot drive after eyelid surgery. We encourage patients to wear comfortable clothing on the day of surgery and require patients to come to the procedure with a clean, fresh face free of lash extensions, cosmetics, and lotions. Additionally, we will confirm that the patient has filled all the prescriptions Dr. Jaiswal ordered before surgery.

For in-office eyelid lift surgery, Dr. Jaiswal uses a reliable, predictable, and strong local anesthetic to ensure each eye rejuvenation experience is comfortable and virtually pain-free. Most patients are pleasantly surprised by the ease of their in-office operative experience and appreciate not having to recover from general anesthesia.

For patients who have elected to have outpatient eyelid surgery, the procedure is performed under anesthesia, and there is no pain. During recovery, they may experience minimal discomfort due to mild swelling over the first three to seven days. Dr. Jaiswal employs special precautions to ensure every eyelid surgery patient has the most comfortable experience possible while still producing the best possible results.

The incisions made during upper blepharoplasty, lower blepharoplasty, or Asian Eyelid Surgery are made in discrete locations and are invisible to the naked eye. For upper eyelid surgery, the incisions are made in the natural crease. Lower eyelid surgery incisions are made just below the lower lash line inside the lid. Dr. Jaiswal achieves a completely scarless lower eyelid lift surgical result by employing advanced surgical techniques when operating in the OR outpatient.

It is critical to protect your skin following eyelid surgery as new skin is more sensitive to light and can make scars unsightly. Direct and indirect sun exposure is not recommended and should be avoided immediately following surgery for at least 2 to 4 weeks. Sunscreen and sunglasses must be worn at all times for 3 to 9 months after surgery to prevent inadvertent skin color changes.

It is important to stay out of the water for at least 3 to 4 weeks following your blepharoplasty surgery. Harmful chemicals can be found in pool water, and saltwater in the ocean can also irritate and aggravate your eyes, slowing your recovery.

Most patients require 6 to 12 weeks before they realize their final results. The first 7 to 14 days of your recovery are critical. Your eyes may be swollen and bruised, but some of the results from your surgery may be immediately apparent.

While our practice understands the desire to see results, taking time to heal is just as important as surgery. To achieve and maximize the best possible surgical outcome, patients must protect their eyes from sunlight and other elements during healing. Your follow-up visits with Dr. Jaiswal and our team of physicians are also essential to keeping your recovery on the fast track.

Your results will last years. Younger patients may need to repeat the procedure as they get older if they experience significant aging.

Yes, our Phoenix Eyelid Surgery is incredibly popular. Many patients enjoy pairing their Eyelid Surgery with other facial surgical procedures like a Brow Lift or Facelift. Other non-surgical cosmetic pairings include Dermal Fillers, Biostimulators, Wrinkle Relaxers like Botox, and PDO Threads. During the consultation process, we encourage patients to ask as many questions as possible and provide us with as much direction as possible. If you have a specific goal in mind and want to hear the best options we can provide, Dr. Jaiswal is happy to lend his artistic approach and expert recommendations to help you achieve your goals.

A blepharoplasty, or upper and lower eyelid lift surgery, is the excision of crepey, lax, hooded skin, fatty deposits, and muscle from around the eyes. The procedure restores the structure of an individual’s eyelids and improves eyesight. Additional goals of this surgery are to lift and tighten skin and create a more natural, youthful, and radiant appearance of the eyes and upper face.

An upper blepharoplasty is designed to enhance the vision and contour the appearance of the upper eyelid. Patients seeking upper eyelid surgery typically look to address hooded and saggy skin that hangs over the eyelid that presents with age. During the natural aging process, skin elasticity and firmness decrease, and excess tissue accumulates. These problems can inhibit vision, cause asymmetry, and make the upper face look older and less attractive.

Lower blepharoplasty removes puffiness, dark circles, hollowing, fine lines, and wrinkles below, laterally, and medially around the eyes. The objective of lower eyelid surgery is to eliminate unwanted eyebags, reposition fatty deposits and sunken fat, and excise saggy skin, muscle, and fat while smoothing and improving skin condition below and around the eye.

If you’re struggling with the appearance of your eyes and upper face, stressing over aging, and having confidence and self-esteem issues, eyelid surgery may be a life-changing option. A blepharoplasty procedure is a quick, easy, and painless way to reshape and rejuvenate the skin around the eyes, eyelids, and upper face to feel younger and more attractive. Several types of eyelid lift surgeries are available, so depending on ethnicity, what part of the eyelid requires work, and the patient’s aesthetic goals, there are some things to evaluate and consider when choosing between upper and lower eyelid blepharoplasty.

  • Upper blepharoplasty surgery

Removes and eliminates skin laxity, hooding, and excess tissue weighing down the upper eyelids, making them look tired and even obscuring eyelashes. An upper blepharoplasty can improve eyesight by removing the hooding and excess skin.

  • Lower blepharoplasty surgery

Repositions and removes fatty deposits and puffiness referred to as “eyebags.” Reduces and eliminates muscle, excess skin, dark circles, fine lines, and deep wrinkles that develop due to natural aging, sun exposure, and genetic traits. By repositioning, reducing, and removing fatty deposits, puffy bags, excess skin and soft tissue, and fine lines and wrinkles, lower blepharoplasty can provide patients with facial rejuvenation under the eyes, completely restoring their youthful and radiant appearance and renewing confidence and self-esteem.

  • Asian blepharoplasty surgery or Asian double eyelid surgery

Creates larger, more attractive eyes by adding a double fold and enhances the shape of the corners of the eyes for total eyelid and upper facial rejuvenation. The surgery improves the contour, symmetry, and appeal of the eyes, as many people of Asian descent are absent a distinctive double fold in the upper eyelid. This is referred to as a hidden double lid or monolid. The absence of this distinctive double fold makes the eyes look smaller and less attractive, even tired.

Blepharoplasty surgery can be performed in-office, under local anesthetic, or in the operating room (OR), under general anesthesia. An upper blepharoplasty, also known as an upper eyelid surgery, when performed as a standalone procedure, is done in-office only, under local anesthesia. At the same time, the patient is awake, numb, and comfortable. The procedure is pain-free, even though patients are awake, and only lasts approximately 20 minutes from the first cut to the final stitch. A lower blepharoplasty, or lower eyelid surgery, can be performed in-office, under a local, or in the operating room (OR) under general anesthesia. When performed in-office, patients can expect to be awake but comfortably numb and pain-free throughout the procedure. When performed in the OR, patients will be asleep and will not feel any discomfort or pain, as a board-certified anesthesiologist will anesthetize them. The procedure may be performed in-office or in the OR after an upper and lower blepharoplasty. The decision on where to operate is discussed and ultimately determined by the board-certified plastic surgeon performing your surgery. At DrSkin Med Spa, Dr. Rohit Jaiswal, MD, head of our plastic surgery department, will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of surgery performed in-office vs the OR during the consultation process and his approach to your case in each environment. In some cases, patients may be at high risk for droopy lids and must undergo surgery in the OR to avoid complications and maximize outcomes.

Immediately following eyelid surgery, patients may experience blurred vision; however, the condition is temporary and will resolve within several hours. The problem is caused by swelling and inflammation of the eyelids, which can affect the cornea, causing mild vision distortion and double vision. Light sensitivity and watering eyes may also present post-surgery but will resolve naturally within the first 2 to 3 days of recovery.

Determining the best, most appropriate, and potential order of procedures for each patient is decided during the initial consultation and examination process and is determined by several factors, which include patient concerns and complaints, aesthetic goals and priorities, age, and the plastic surgeon performing your surgery and managing your aftercare. Patients may take a stepladder approach to surgery if their plastic surgeon recommends a brow lift as a second surgery, following an initial blepharoplasty. However, the benefit of concurrently undergoing both a brow lift and blepharoplasty is total upper face rejuvenation, a far more significant, robust, and cohesive improvement, performed in a singular surgery.

Yes, the approach to blepharoplasty surgery does differ based on ethnicity, but only in terms of technique when performing Asian eyelid surgery. Asian blepharoplasty surgery is a more unique and complex procedure, offering patients a distinct upper eyelid double fold, referred to as a monolid or hidden double lid. This results in larger, more attractive eyes by creating a double fold and, in some instances, by enhancing the shape of the corners of the eyes, referred to as epicanthoplasty. For all other races and ethnic groups, the approach to blepharoplasty surgery is more typical and standardized. However, the procedure results and advanced surgical techniques employed depend on the surgeon’s training, experience, and skill set. This is why choosing the right plastic surgeon for your case is vital. Dr. Jaiswal has performed over 10,000 blepharoplasty cases in his illustrious 10-year career and is trained to utilize all advanced surgical techniques available. His goal is to open up the eye without compromising an individual’s natural beauty and facial characteristics.

If you are experiencing a loss of confidence and self-esteem surrounding the appearance of your eyelids and upper face and are bothered by the presence of saggy, hooded, droopy, and puffy eyelids, you may be an excellent candidate for an upper blepharoplasty. If you suffer from diminished vision due to ptosis, you may also be a good candidate for upper eyelid surgery. Patients must also be healthy and free of medical conditions that could impede or impact healing and recovery.

A lower blepharoplasty, or lower eyelid lift, corrects defects, deformities, and disfigurations of the lower lid by restoring and reshaping the appearance of the eye by removing and repositioning excess skin, fat, and muscle. The end result is renewed and rejuvenated eyelids, making the eyes look younger and more alert.

There are no ideal age or age restrictions when evaluating a lower blepharoplasty surgery. The decision to have surgery is usually a deeply personal one. It is often rooted in an individual’s loss of self-confidence and self-esteem associated with an ongoing or developing condition. The natural aging process and the amount of excess skin, fat, and muscle can also determine a patient’s confidence, influencing the decision to undergo surgery. Dr. Jaiswal has treated over 10,000 lower blepharoplasty patients as young as 18 and as old as 85. If you or a loved one is considering lower eyelid surgery, we invite you to learn more about the procedure and your options. Call (480) 904-3311 today and book your complimentary consultation with a member of the expert medical team led by board-certified plastic surgeon Dr Rohit Jaiswal, MD.

Eyelid surgery is one of the safest, quickest, and easiest surgeries to undergo and recover from. During this in-office procedure, Dr. Jaiswal will administer a local anesthetic, create tiny incisions hidden in the creases and folds of the eyelids, remove excess skin, fat, and muscle, and suture the incisions accordingly. When performing upper and lower eyelid surgery, patients can expect the procedure to last 60 to 90 minutes. Rest and relaxation during the first 2 to 3 days of recovery is vital. Sutures will be removed between days 3 and 7, and most individuals are comfortable returning to work and social activities between days 7 and 10. While you can expect to visualize the results of your surgery almost immediately, it will take 3 to 4 months to realize the full results of your eyelid surgery, as your body takes time to recover from the trauma of this minimally invasive procedure.

The results of your blepharoplasty are permanent and may last a lifetime. However, blepharoplasty surgery doesn’t combat natural aging, developing medical conditions, sun exposure, and lifestyle choices, all of which will contribute to the longevity and permanence of your surgical results. Younger patients may need to repeat their blepharoplasty as they get older if they experience significant aging that presents creepy, loose, hooded skin, and fatty deposits requiring excision and/or repositioning.

Most patients recover from an upper and lower blepharoplasty in 3 to 14 days. Stitches are removed 5 to 7 days into recovery, and individuals generally return to work after 1 to 2 weeks. While most patients can expect to visualize their results almost immediately, final results will not be realized for 6 to 12 months following a blepharoplasty surgery.

The most crucial element to preparation is identifying and consulting with a qualified board-certified plastic surgeon who will oversee every aspect of surgery and recovery. The surgery results are only as good as the doctor selected to operate. In meeting with the plastic surgeon, preparing a list of qualifying questions is critical to ensure the right person has been selected for your surgery. The plastic surgeon should understand and share your vision for blepharoplasty surgery. Once selected, the surgeon will require the patient to undergo medical testing and examination to ensure they’re healthy enough for surgery. Several days prior to the procedure, patients will be needed to pick up their prescriptions. The doctor may also ask individuals to stop taking certain medications and consuming some substances upwards of 2 months before surgery; this includes all tobacco products. Staying hydrated and maintaining a healthy diet before surgery will help the body recover and may expedite healing following a blepharoplasty.

Yes, as with all minimally invasive surgery, there will be scars. However, Dr. Jaiswal is a master surgeon who has performed 10,000 blepharoplasty cases over his 10 years in practice. He employs his training, experience, and the most advanced surgical techniques to discreetly conceal and hide incisions in the folds and creases of the eyelid, making them completely inconspicuous and near invisible. Additionally, eyelid skin regenerates exceptionally well, better than most other locations on the human body, making the incisions impossible to see once healed.

Although the sun is an excellent source of vitamin D, increases serotonin levels, and can have an anti-inflammatory effect on your body, it’s vitally important to use extreme caution and avoid sun exposure to your eyes and upper face for 2 to 4 weeks following a blepharoplasty. Furthermore, patients are advised to steer clear of artificial tanning beds and avoid sunburns as the freshly operated eyelid skin is extremely delicate. Sun exposure can cause adverse events and alter the results of your surgery, leaving you with unsightly hyperpigmentation or, worse, visible scarring. If you must be in the sun for any reason, individuals are instructed to wear dark sunglasses and 50 SPF sunscreen at all times.

Yes, for individuals who have undergone eyelid surgery, are healing well, and present no dry eye or significant eye irritation, contact use may be resumed 1 to 2 weeks following blepharoplasty surgery. Patients experiencing an atypical recovery and not on track are advised to use glasses until their plastic surgeon clears them. Then, contacts may be resumed.

Patients may bathe, shower, and use soap, shampoos, and body wash 24 hours after blepharoplasty surgery. However, it’s paramount to steer clear of pool water, stay out of the ocean, and not submerge your head underwater for 3 to 4 weeks, even in a bathtub. Harmful chemicals, salt water, preservatives and byproducts from soap and shampoos, and water flooding the area can cause infection and irritation and prolong recovery. Individuals who maintain an active lifestyle are encouraged to do light walks for exercise during the initial stages, or first several weeks, of recovery.

Yes, absolutely! Many patients combine eyelid surgery with other popular cosmetic surgeries for total facial rejuvenation. These procedures include a facelift, brow lift, forehead reduction, lip lift, genioplasty or chin augmentation, otoplasty, and fat grafting, to name a few such options. If you have a specific goal or want to hear your best options to address your concerns and achieve your aesthetic goals, Dr. Jaiswal will provide expert insight and counsel during your consultation. Call (480) 904-3311 to book your complimentary consultation today!

Following eyelid surgery, patients should sleep on their back at a 45-degree incline for 2 to 4 weeks. Sleeping at an incline helps promote blood flow and improves circulation, reducing swelling, inflammation, and bruising. The sum of events speeds healing times and can expedite recovery exponentially. When patients sleep on their stomachs, they risk putting too much pressure on their eyes and sutures, which can lead to dehiscence of the incisions, cause complications and adverse events, and extend recovery times.

Patients are encouraged to wait at least 6 months following laser eye surgery before undergoing a second procedure, like a blepharoplasty or eyelid lift. The waiting period ensures that the eyes have completely recovered from the refractive treatment and allows the position and shape of the eyelids to settle after potential alterations.
