What is Gynecomastia?

What Is Gynecomastia Surgery?

Gynecomastia surgery, also known as male breast reduction, is a procedure aimed at reducing the excess breast tissue in men, providing a flatter, contoured, more masculine chest. Hormonal imbalances, genetics, certain medications, and lifestyle factors can all contribute to the development of gynecomastia, resulting in enlarged breast tissue. This condition can cause self-consciousness and affect a man’s overall self-esteem. Gynecomastia surgery can effectively address these concerns by removing excess tissue and reshaping the chest, helping men regain their confidence and achieve a more masculine appearance.

Dr. Jaiswal has extensive experience performing gynecomastia surgery, having successfully treated hundreds of patients throughout his career. His deep knowledge and advanced surgical techniques ensure each procedure is customized to meet the unique needs and goals of the patient. What to Expect During Your Gynecomastia Surgery Consultation?

Gynecomastia surgery at our clinic is tailored to meet the individual needs of each patient. When you arrive for your complimentary consultation, you will be greeted by one of our providers, who will guide you through our personalized, hands-on process.

After being welcomed, you will be taken to a private treatment room to discuss your concerns about the appearance of your chest. Your clinician will educate you about gynecomastia surgery and other treatment options while answering any questions you have. They will take photographs and measurements, provide a list of potential surgical fees, and address any follow-up questions. These photos and measurements will then be reviewed by Dr. Jaiswal, who will assess your candidacy for the procedure(s) and finalize the cost of your surgical plan.

Once Dr. Jaiswal determines your candidacy, the provider will contact you with his feedback and outline the next steps. Once you decide to move forward, a formal quote will be provided, and a second consultation with Dr. Jaiswal will be scheduled to dive deeper into your surgical plan, expected recovery, and additional details of the procedure.

Gynecomastia Techniques

Gynecomastia surgery employs three primary techniques to address excess breast tissue in men. The choice of method, whether liposuction, excision, or a combination of both, depends on the amount of breast tissue, your body type, and your desired outcome.

  • Liposuction: Ideal for cases where gynecomastia is caused primarily by excess fatty tissue. A thin hollow tube (cannula) is inserted through a small incision to extract the fat, creating a flatter, more contoured chest.
  • Excision: Used when there’s a need to remove glandular breast tissue or excess skin. This technique may also involve reducing the size of the areola or repositioning the nipple to achieve a more natural male contour.
  • Combination of Liposuction and Excision: In some instances, combining both techniques offers the best results. This comprehensive approach addresses both fatty and glandular tissues, ensuring a balanced and natural appearance.

The Best Candidates for Gynecomastia Surgery

Suppose you are a male adult experiencing confidence issues or a loss of self-esteem associated with the shape, size, and overall appearance of your chest. In that case, you may be an excellent candidate for male breast reduction surgery. If your breasts are sensitive to the touch, tender around the areola, inflamed, and in pain, you may also be an excellent candidate for surgery. Patients with firm, elastic skin that can contract and adapt to the new contours of their body may also be considered viable candidates. Patients must be in good overall physical health with realistic expectations. If you or a loved one is considering gynecomastia surgery, the best way to determine if you’re a suitable candidate is to schedule a consultation at our office with our expert medical team, led by board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Rohit Jaiswal, MD. Please call (480) 904-3311 today to book your complimentary consultation.

What Can You Expect on the Day of Your Gynecomastia Surgery

When you arrive at our state-of-the-art surgical facility in Gilbert, AZ, for your gynecomastia surgery, you will be warmly welcomed by our patient coordinator and escorted to the operating room. Dr. Jaiswal will then meet with you to review the specifics of your procedure. Using a special, skin-safe pen, he will mark the areas on your chest where incisions will be made to remove excess tissue and achieve a more contoured appearance.

As Dr. Jaiswal prepares the surgical site, he will explain his approach to your surgery, including the use of general anesthesia, incision locations, tissue removal techniques, the type of sutures, any expected discomfort, and post-operative instructions. Once the surgical area is thoroughly prepared, a board-certified anesthesiologist will administer anesthesia to ensure you are comfortable through the procedure.

Gynecomastia surgery generally takes about 1 to 3 hours, depending on the extent of tissue removal. After the surgery is complete, your incisions will be closed, and you will be taken to a private recovery room. You will be monitored until you are ready to go home with a caretaker as you will be unable to drive yourself after the procedure.

How Does Male Breast Reduction Work?

Genecomastia Before and After

Gynecomastia Recovery

Once you wake up from anesthesia and are cleared by Dr. Jaiswal, you will be released to your caretaker. Dr. Jaiswal will review the post-op care instructions with both of you to ensure they are clearly understood and followed. Recovery from gynecomastia surgery generally takes about 4 to 8 weeks, but this can vary by patient. You may experience some social downtime during the first week and are advised to rest as much as possible during this initial period.

During the first few days, post-operative pain and discomfort will gradually decrease. Light walking is encouraged to promote blood flow and aid healing, but only after Dr. Jaiswal gives the go-ahead. Most patients feel more like themselves after the first week, with swelling and bruising starting to subside. You can begin walking more and moving around more frequently but should avoid heavy lifting or putting pressure on your chest.

Many patients are able to return to work within two weeks post-surgery. Your sutures will dissolve naturally over time, so no removal is necessary. It’s important to avoid strenuous exercises and heavy lifting during this period, but light, sedentary activities are safe. By weeks 3 and 4, you’ll start to see the results of your surgery more clearly, with your incisions healing nicely.

At DrSkin Med Spa, we prioritize your safety, health, and overall well-being with a hands-on and attentive post-operative protocol. Follow-up appointments with Dr. Jaiswal and another physician on our staff are scheduled the day after your surgery, weekly for one month, and monthly for up to 3 to 4 months to ensure a smooth recovery and successful outcome. Final results are usually visible within 6 to 8 weeks. Any scarring will fade over time, becoming less noticeable and blending naturally with your skin.

Frequently Asked Questions— Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia is the formation of excess and enlarged glandular breast tissue in boys and men that can affect both breasts evenly or may present asymmetrically on one side. This medical condition is commonly associated with an influx and imbalance of hormones, which include testosterone and estrogen. Males can experience this imbalance at any point in their lives, but it has the propensity to occur more frequently during adolescence, like puberty. Men can also experience an influx of hormones during birth and old age, and certain health conditions may also be a precursor to gynecomastia. At the same time, some medications may lead to an increase in breast tissue. Additionally, the introduction and use of supplemental testosterone, especially high doses, can disrupt the body’s natural hormonal balance, causing unsafe fluctuations in natural testosterone output as well as increased estrogen production. This can trigger gynecomastia, leaving breast tissue enlarged, swollen, and tender, but can also impact normal testicular function, causing testicular atrophy.

Gynecomastia is a relatively common disorder affecting approximately 50% of all adolescent or teen males and can persist into adulthood in up to 20% of men. While this is a wide margin, most cases are resolved without needing treatment in 6 months to 2 years. Swollen and tender breast tissue will eventually subside and heal, reverting to normal breast tissue without surgical intervention. The condition most frequently presents during puberty when hormonal influx is at its height and levels more unstable.

In general, most patients can return to the gym in 7 to 10 days but should not resume chest workouts for 4 to 6 weeks to ensure their body has properly healed from their initial surgery. Performing rigorous activities and strenuous exercise can be dangerous and cause complications, exacerbating recovery times. It’s important for patients who have or plan to undergo gynecomastia surgery to understand that it’s essential to slowly ease your body back into exercise and high-intensity weightlifting, especially heavy chest movements. During the first 2 weeks of recovery, light cardiovascular exercises, like walking and riding a stationary bike, are advised. During weeks 2 to 4, patients may begin incorporating some stretching exercises and increase their stride or pace, but there is no weightlifting. During weeks 4 to 6, some patients may begin doing push-ups, pull-ups, presses, and curls but should not engage in any weighted movements until they have been cleared by their plastic surgeon.

Gynecomastia surgery is an outpatient procedure performed in the operating room (OR) under general anesthesia and takes 1 to 3 hours to complete. Individuals will be asleep and comfortable throughout the procedure. The specific nature and extent of the patient’s condition will dictate the complexity of the surgery and the required OR time. Gland excision with minor simple liposuction is expected and will fall within the norm, about 1 to 2 hours. However, if a patient’s gynecomastia surgery involves lifting breast tissue and moving the areola, individuals can expect longer OR and recovery times.

Recovery from gynecomastia surgery takes approximately 4 to 8 weeks, and while patients begin to visualize results almost immediately, final results will not be realized for 3 to 6 months. Pain, discomfort, and tenderness will subside first in about 7 to 10 days. As time elapses, inflammation, swelling, and bruising will dissipate between weeks 2 and 6. Many patients begin driving and engaging in light activities by day 3 and are back to work within the first 2 weeks following their surgery. If your job isn’t sedentary, requires heavy lifting, or strenuous activity, you may be required to wait until you have been cleared by your doctor. Individuals are encouraged to gradually increase their activity levels once their plastic surgeon has cleared them. Patients must adhere to their plastic surgeon’s post-operative recovery plan to maximize the results of their surgery.

Yes, the results of male breast reduction surgery are final and permanent. However, the procedure cannot combat the aging process, developing medical conditions, and weight fluctuations. While excess skin, fat cells, and glandular breast tissue were previously removed during the initial procedure, extreme weight gain can lead to new fatty deposits, which, in rare cases, may require revision surgery to remove and clean up. The introduction and continued use of large amounts of testosterone and anabolic steroids can also lead to complications, resulting in the need for a second surgery.

In most cases, a small, insignificant scar may form, but as in all cases, it will fade over time. Dr Jaiswal is a highly trained master surgeon and tactician who artistically conceals scars in the creases, folds, and natural contours of the breast and skin, making them nearly invisible. As a board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Jaiswal utilizes his advanced surgical skills to create small incisions of approximately 2mm. This minimizes the potential for significant and unsightly scarring. However, each case is unique, as is each patient, and large patients with more fat may require larger incisions to access and remove glandular tissue and excess fat. Regular lymphatic massages, proper wound care, and remodeling treatments can help conceal and remove unwanted scars and surgical incisions during recovery.

Yes, absolutely. Patients seeking pectoral implants following gynecomastia surgery must be healed from their initial surgery, as trauma, swelling, and inflammation can change the final appearance of the individual’s chest, which inevitably influences the size, shape, and placement of the implants. Pectoral implants offer patients renewed confidence by addressing asymmetry, defects, deformities from birth, and underdeveloped pectoralis muscles. When performed by an experienced board-certified plastic surgeon, pectoral implants can be custom carved to the patient’s anatomy, making the implant undetectable. Patients can also consider fat grafting as a more naturopathic procedure with similar results.

No, unfortunately, weight loss doesn’t reverse or resolve gynecomastia naturally. The condition is not caused by the presence or production of fatty deposits but rather by excessive glandular growth in existing breast tissue, which is usually a product of hormonal imbalance. Therefore, it is impossible to lose or work off enlarged male breasts because the enlarged breast tissue is not influenced by weight loss. However, weight loss can improve the appearance of gynecomastia, diet, exercise, and a healthy lifestyle can help reduce Body Mass Index (BMI), which is fat to muscle ratio, and improve muscle definition and tone, which may also prevent future weight gain.
