How Does CO2 Laser Resurfacing Work?

C02 laser systems offer an advantage over other kinds of lasers, as they allow for the precise targeting of the middle and deep dermal layers of skin.

A fractional CO2 laser works by delivering several microscopic beams of highly concentrated light into your skin. The fractionated energy works more efficiently to clear out dead skin cells and stimulate collagen production naturally.

What to Expect During a CO2 Laser Resurfacing Procedure

On the day of your appointment, you will arrive at the Dr. Skin office. Our friendly team will check you in and get you prepped. We ask that you do not wear any makeup on the day of your appointment. Once you are ready to go, one of our experienced technicians will begin to treat the target areas. Fractionated CO2 lasers give us more control over the laser, allowing us to systemically treat sections of skin quickly and effectively.

The average treatment length is 60 minutes, though it may take longer, depending on the size of the targeted area.

The laser system will leave patches of treated skin. Although you will be given a topical or local anesthetic prior to the procedure, some patients still experience some mild discomfort from the laser. After you leave the office, it is best to return home to rest. Your skin will feel a little tight and there will be some inflammation. After 4-5 days post-treatment, your skin will peel. Soon after, the redness goes away.

Is There Any Downtime?

Yes, there is some discomfort to be expected. Depending on how aggressively your skin is treated, the post-treatment redness, swelling, and pain will require that you stay home to rest. The Dr. Skin team will provide you with precise aftercare instructions to make sure your downtime is no longer than necessary.

When Will I See Results?

While results are visible immediately after the procedure, it will only improve from there. Results generally take a while to come around—around 6 months post-treatment—and depend on your skincare regimen and skin color and type. The results are permanent, but your skin is going to age differently compared to others, and so some people may notice aging sooner.

You can maintain your results by wearing moisturizer and sunscreen daily to protect yourself from sun damage. Most patients do not require maintenance treatments.

Who Is a Good Candidate for CO2 Laser Resurfacing?

The ideal candidate is someone who has mild to moderate aging and wrinkles. Furthermore, if you have active acne, dark skin, or sagging skin, CO2 laser resurfacing may be right for you.

As with any laser-based treatment, some individuals may be ineligible due to a medical condition or other factors. At Dr. Skin, we meet with every potential patient during an initial consultation to go over your medical and dermatological history, so that we can help you choose the best course of action. For CO2 laser resurfacing, individuals who are pregnant, who are prone to viral breakouts, or who have an active infection may be unable to receive CO2 laser resurfacing.
