What is a Dual Light Acne Treatment?

DrSkin uses Venus Versa technology, a kind of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy that uses both blue and red tones to treat your acne. This technology is innovative and unique, as it treats active acne flareups, as well as targeting the root cause—bacteria. The skilled technicians at DrSkin can adjust the wavelengths of the IPL beams to better suit your individual needs.

The end result is clearer, smoother, healthier skin and even fewer future bouts of acne. Sounds amazing, right?

How Does a Dual Light Acne Treatment Work?

As you may know, acne is caused by overactive sebaceous glands and  bacteria. Blue and red light therapy targets these two things specifically. First, the blue light penetrates the oil glands, ridding them of the bacteria that prompts your flareups. The blue light is effective because the bacteria contain pigments that break down in the presence of the hue. By removing the bacteria, your skin’s natural defenses can work better, and the healing process will be more effective.

The red light is used to reduce inflammation caused by acne and assists with accelerating the healing process. Red light penetrates deep into the layers of the skin, reaching even the farthest pores.

Dual light acne treatments were designed based on scientific research, which has repeatedly shown the combination of blue and red light working against acne.

The Benefits of Dual Light Acne Treatments

Blue and red acne light therapy is highly effective. Here is a look at some of the benefits:

  • Treats and reduces active acne flareups
  • Removes the bacteria that causes acne breakouts
  • Reduces the likelihood of future breakouts
  • Reduces the inflammation surrounding the treated area
  • Minimal downtime
  • Quick and comfortable treatment with visible results afterwards
  • Safe for most skin types
  • Skin is noticeably smoother and clearer after treatment

What to Expect From a Dual Light Acne Treatment

A single session generally lasts between 15 and 20 minutes, but it depends on the size of the area being treated. The treatments will take place twice a week for a month, usually 3-4 days apart.

Pre-Treatment Tips

  • Keep your skin clean.
  • Avoid makeup, creams, and lotions prior to your appointment.
  • Do not use irritating products 2-3 days before the session.
  • Avoid tanning and sun exposure.
  • Shave the area to be treated before your treatment, if necessary.
  • Do not wear jewelry.

Post-Treatment Tips

  • Wear sunscreen for at least 2 weeks after your appointment and do not use tanning beds.
  • Avoid any treatment or contact made to the treated area for 2 days after your treatment. This includes bathing.
  • Gently wash the treated area using non-irritating products after your session. Pat dry.
  • Makeup can be applied, but please wear sunscreen too.

Is There Any Downtime?

No downtime is required for this procedure. Dual light acne treatments are quick, effective, and non-invasive, so there is little to no time needed to recover. Feel free to head back to work or home, which is best for you after the appointment.

How Long Do Results Last?

After each treatment, you will notice small differences. These results compound with every treatment, so they become more noticeable with time. Usually, it takes 7-8 sessions for the best results. Once the desired result is obtained, you can maintain your smooth, glowing skin with a single maintenance treatment every 6 months or so.

Keep in mind that results are not permanent, especially if there is a risk of your acne coming back. The specialists at DrSkin can provide you with the tools and skincare products needed to curb future acne breakouts.

Who is a Good Candidate for Dual Light Acne Treatments?

Anyone who has acne or inflammation from an acne breakout on the face or body is eligible for dual light acne treatments. However, dual light acne therapies are best used on light or medium skin tones. Darker skin is less responsive to the blue and red light. Furthermore, there is a high risk of discoloration resulting from the therapy, due to the pigmentation of the skin.

Other conditions that may prevent you from receiving this service include epilepsy, cancer, metal implants, pregnancy, active skin disorders, and so on. A history of keloid scarring will also be considered.

You may want to avoid blue and red light therapy if you have a tattoo in the targeted area.
