Tummy Tuck |
Gilbert, AZ | DrSkin Med Spa

Many people dream of having a toned, flat abdomen, but even if you work diligently on strengthening your core muscles through targeted exercises and hours at the gym, achieving this goal can be challenging. Perhaps you are genetically predisposed to holding fat around your midsection, or pregnancy has left you with weakened abdominal muscles and unsightly, sagging skin around your belly. A tummy tuck procedure at DrSkin Plastic Surgery, Regenerative, and Medical Spa may be the perfect solution to simultaneously address all of these concerns. With the expertise of Top 100 Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. Rohit Jaiswal, a tummy tuck procedure can help restore your self-confidence and bring your dream of achieving a flat, elongated, and elegant stomach to reality.

What is a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck, medically known as abdominoplasty, is a body contouring procedure that involves removing excess, loose skin around the midsection and may also include repairing abdominal wall concerns, such as diastasis, hernia, and general abdominal wall weakness. The results include an attractive, smooth, and toned abdomen you’ll feel confident showing off.

Weight fluctuations, pregnancy, genetics, stress, hormones, diet and exercise, and the natural progression of aging can all accumulate stubborn fat and sagging skin around the midsection. For both men and women, the abdomen is an area of the body that harbors an enormous amount of contention. For women, it projects health, strength, and beauty. For men, it represents masculinity, hard work, and attraction. A tummy tuck can effectively sculpt the waistline, and, in most cases, repair weakened muscles in the abdominal walls, creating a more toned and sculpted stomach.

What to Expect During Your Tummy Tuck Consultation?

A candid, one-on-one consultation about your health history and aesthetic goals can help determine if a tummy tuck is the right option for you. Our team of exceptional physicians and clinicians is here to conduct a thorough, informative consultation during which you should feel free to discuss your complaints and concerns about the appearance of your midsection.

When you arrive for your initial complimentary consultation at DrSkin Med Spa, you will be greeted by one of our providers and led to a private treatment room where they will guide you through our detailed, hands-on consultation process. During a tummy tuck consultation, your provider will inquire about your current medications, previous surgeries, health history, and surgical goals. They will evaluate your overall health, explore potential risks and complications, and propose a customized tummy tuck procedure to suit your needs.

At the end of your consultation, the provider will take photographs and measurements of your midsection, provide you with a list of potential surgical fees, and answer any follow-up questions. Your file will then be shared with Dr. Jaiswal, who will determine your candidacy for treatment and begin finalizing the cost of your surgical plan.

Once Dr. Jaiswal determines your candidacy, the provider will contact you to discuss his feedback and proceed with possible next steps. Once you’ve confirmed you are ready to move forward, a formal quote is provided, and a second consultation will be scheduled, this time with Dr. Jaiswal, to further explore your tummy tuck surgical plan, expected recovery, and other details regarding your procedure. Your tummy tuck consultation is an excellent opportunity to ask any questions you have concerning this surgery. We encourage our patients to bring a list of concerns so that we can provide detailed answers to help you feel confident in your decision to get a tummy tuck.

The Different Types of Tummy Tuck Procedures

Based on Dr. Jaiswal’s initial recommendations during your consultation, he will tailor your tummy tuck procedure to meet your desired aesthetic goals, including determining if you may need a full tummy tuck, a mini tummy tuck, and a tummy tuck with liposuction.

Full Tummy Tuck

A full tummy tuck is the most common type of abdominoplasty because it addresses aesthetic and abdominal wall issues (diastasis, hernia, frailty, and bulges) by repairing and equalizing the abdominal wall function. Correcting abdominal wall issues requires true customization, which is where Dr. Jaiswal truly sets himself apart from other plastic surgeons performing abdominoplasty.

During a full tummy tuck, Dr. Jaiswal makes a curved incision at or just above the pubic hairline. Through this incision, he will address the underlying weakened abdominal muscles once the skin has been lifted. A second incision is made around the belly button to free the remaining skin up to the ribs, which allows for the excision of loose skin from the entire abdominal region. The excess skin is pulled down and trimmed before being sutured together, and a new belly button opening is created and pulled through to the surface.

Mini Tummy Tuck

For women and men with skin-only issues, a mini tummy tuck can improve the appearance of the lower abdomen with less extensive surgical measures than a full tummy tuck. However, a mini tummy tuck only focuses on excess skin and does not address weakened or damaged abdominal muscles.

During a mini tummy tuck, only one incision is made far below the belly button and just above or at the pubic area, where Dr. Jaiswal will reduce sagging skin and tighten the lower abdomen.

Tummy Tuck with Liposuction

For patients with excess skin and stubborn fat that have refused to go away with diet and exercise, Dr. Jaiswal can conduct a complete tummy tuck with abdominal liposuction. In this scenario, Dr. Jaiswal will perform liposuction prior to beginning the tummy tuck to sculpt and flatten the midsection.

What Is the Difference Between an Abdominoplasty and a Panniculectomy?

Although a panniculectomy and a tummy tuck are often confused, they are entirely different procedures. A panniculectomy focuses on restoring the pannus, the apron of skin around the lower midsection. In contrast, a tummy tuck addresses skin laxity and muscle weakness from the ribs down past the navel. Typically, a panniculectomy is performed after a patient has achieved drastic weight loss and has significantly sagging skin in the abdomen.

The Best Candidate for a Tummy Tuck

Ideal candidates for tummy tuck in Arizona at DrSkin Med Spa are individuals with loose skin or weakened abdominal muscles due to weight fluctuations, pregnancy, or aging. These individuals may have fatty tissue resistant to diet and exercise changes, resulting in an unflattering abdominal appearance. Those seeking cosmetic surgery should be in good overall health and at a stable, healthy weight before considering a tummy tuck.

To determine whether a tummy tuck is right for you, our team of experts, led by Dr. Jaiswal, will provide you with their expertise and experience and make personalized recommendations based on your desired results. If you want to enhance the appearance of your abdomen and regain or finally achieve a firmer, more defined abdominal shape, consider scheduling a consultation at DrSkin Med Spa to discuss how abdominoplasty can help you.

Preparing for Your Tummy Tuck

Appropriate preoperative preparation is essential for a safe tummy tuck surgery. Following these protocols can lower the possibility of complications and expedite healing.

One week before your abdominoplasty procedure, Dr. Jaiswal will request that you stop taking aspirin and blood-thinning medications, which can interfere with the body’s ability to clot blood normally. Focus on keeping a balanced, nutritious diet with foods that strengthen your immune system and encourage healing. In your diet, include lean meats, fruits, and many veggies. Stay well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water.

In the 48 to 72 hours before surgery, Dr. Jaiswal will send your prescription medications to your preferred pharmacy and confirm that you have them before the day of your abdominoplasty. Patients will be provided with written and verbal pre- and post-operative instructions, which are discussed and reviewed several times to ensure mutual understanding and compliance. Patients should be freshly showered on the day of their surgery and arrive at the surgical center in loose, comfortable clothing.

What Can You Expect on the Day of Your Tummy Tuck

When you arrive at our state-of-the-art, world-class surgical facility in Gilbert, Arizona, on the day of your abdominoplasty, you will be greeted by a patient coordinator and taken to the operating room. While you are being prepped, Dr. Jaiswal will review the details of your customized tummy tuck. He will use a non-toxic pen to mark the specific areas on your abdomen where he plans to place incisions, trim away excess skin, and relocate your belly button if necessary.

As Dr. Jaiswal marks your skin, he will discuss his approach to your tummy tuck, including incision placement and size, the type of dissolvable sutures he will use, and any expected discomfort. He will also review your post-operative instructions.

Once the surgical area is thoroughly prepared, a board-certified anesthesiologist will put you into a deep and comfortable sleep, and Dr. Jaiswal will begin the surgical process. Depending on the specific details of your abdominoplasty, the procedure generally requires 2 to 3 hours and can go upwards of 4 to 5 hours depending on the degree of skin excision and muscle repair.

After the surgery is complete, your incisions will be closed, and you will be taken to a private room for recovery.

Tummy Tuck Recovery

Once you have fully woken up from anesthesia, Dr. Jaiswal will also review the post-op care instructions with you and your caretaker before clearing you to go home for the rest of your recovery.

Recovery from a tummy tuck generally takes approximately 2 to 8 weeks depending on whether you elected to have a mini tummy tuck (2 weeks), tummy tuck with liposuction (4 to 6 weeks), or full tummy tuck (6 to 8 weeks). After the procedure, you will likely experience 10 to 15 days of social downtime and should focus primarily on resting for the first 7 days. During this time, any intense post-operative pain and discomfort will dissipate. Light walking is encouraged immediately after surgery to stimulate blood flow and healing factors, but only after Dr. Jaiswal says it is safe for you to do so. For the better part of the first week, your primary focus should be to sleep and rest.

After the first week, swelling and bruising should decrease, and you may feel more like yourself. You can start walking more and moving around more frequently, but you should refrain from heavy lifting or bending at the waist.

Most patients return to work within 2 weeks after surgery. Your sutures are dissolvable and will slowly disintegrate naturally over time.

By weeks 4 and 5, you’ll be able to start thoroughly enjoying the results of your abdominoplasty. Your incisions should have fully healed, and most swelling and bruising should be gone.

With dedication to our patient’s safety, health, and general well-being, our post-operative protocol is extremely hands-on and attentive. We schedule mandatory follow-up appointments with Dr. Jaiswal and another physician on our staff the day after your surgery, weekly for one month, and monthly for up to 3 to 4 months. This protocol helps ensure successful outcomes and a comfortable, safe recovery of our patients.

Patients will continue to see improvements for the better part of 3 to 12 months. Any scarring is well-concealed below the panty or bikini line and in the natural crease of the pubic region.

Tummy Tuck FAQS

Patients should be weight-stable for at least 6 months and within 15 pounds of their goal weight before their tummy tuck consultation. Weight fluctuations post-procedure can stretch the stomach and the supporting abdominal tissue, compromising the surgical results.

No, abdominoplasty surgery is not a solution for weight loss or obesity. Furthermore, patients should be weight-stable and close to their ideal weight before their tummy tuck. During your tummy tuck procedure, Dr. Jaiswal may remove several pounds of excess skin and stubborn fat, but this does not equate to significant weight loss, making a tummy tuck an inappropriate surgery for patients seeking weight loss solutions.

On the day of your tummy tuck, you will arrive at our state-of-the-art, world-class surgery center in Gilbert, Arizona. After being greeted by a patient coordinator, you will be escorted to the operating room where board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Rohit Jaiswal will meet you and prepare you for surgery. Your procedure will last 2 to 3 hours, but you will be unconscious, under general anesthesia, free of pain and discomfort. After Dr. Jaiswal performs your surgery, removing excess fat and skin, he will close and bandage your incisions. After you awake and the effects of the anesthesia wear off, Dr. Jaiswal will discharge you to a caretaker as you will not be able to drive. You can expect to feel groggy for some time post-procedure as it can take several hours for the anesthesia to wear off completely. You should expect some discomfort, which can be managed with approved medication prescribed by Dr. Jaiswal. Patients must have all prescription medications on hand, all compression garments, and at least one lymphatic massage scheduled.

The first and most apparent sign of a great abdominoplasty result is a flat belly with natural-looking abdominal contours. To achieve this 3-dimensional result, Dr. Jaiswal will sculpt curves and contours to accentuate your newly flattened stomach. By combining some liposuction with your tummy tuck, Dr. Jaiswal artfully removes fat and reshapes the patient’s physique.

The second key to a successful tummy tuck is an inconspicuous or low scar. Scars can be detrimental to a patient’s self-esteem and confidence, so positioning the incision as low as possible, just above the pubic area, is critical to the success of a tummy tuck surgery. The scar should also be linear and narrow, concealed well below the bikini or underwear line for maximum privacy. Anything other than a thin, horizontal incision, hip to hip, would be disappointing regardless of placement.

Last but not least is a belly button that looks natural. It should look like your old, original belly button, but it isn’t too narrow of a slit, nor is it a perfect circle. To achieve this, Dr. Jaiswal will tack down the skin, tissue, and fat around the belly button so that your naval doesn’t appear too flat and has some dimension to it.

While you are guaranteed to look slimmer, fitter, and healthier after a tummy tuck, the procedure will not promote or strengthen your “abs.” Abdominoplasty surgery helps tighten the abdominal wall and sagging skin that can mask well-defined abs by removing excess fat and tissue; however, the procedure isn’t designed to deliver washboard abs. It will, however, give patients a better definition overall. By maintaining a healthy lifestyle, you can tone your muscles and accentuate your results further with diet and core-strengthening exercises that focus on fat-burning and muscle-building around your midsection.

This is dependent upon the extent of your tummy tuck and the needs of the patient. In most cases, for a full abdominoplasty, Dr. Jaiswal will create a new belly button. Dr. Jaiswal has performed thousands of tummy tuck cases over the life of his career and your new belly button will look completely natural once you’ve healed from your surgery.

A tummy tuck may require post-surgical drains for a period of no less than 5 days, and as long as 2 weeks. The purpose of the drains is to minimize fluid buildup and the risk of complications, which include infection, swelling, pain, and fever.

Muscle repair is not always required when undergoing a tummy tuck. However, it is considered an essential component of the procedure and can enhance a patient’s aesthetic outcome by helping to flatten and tone the abdomen. Dr. Jaiswal is a highly trained and experienced plastic surgeon and will discuss his approach to your customized surgical plan during the consultation process, so you know what to expect prior to and post-surgery.

No, Dr. Jaiswal utilizes advanced surgical techniques and dissolvable sutures to prevent stitch marks. They do not need to be removed and disintegrate over time naturally.

As with all surgery, your swelling is temporary and will subside in time. Your body has experienced significant trauma in the form of pain, inflammation, and swelling. While there are ways to minimize postoperative swelling and inflammation, which can also accelerate the healing process, you should expect to be swollen for approximately 2 months. Some patients report residual swelling that lasted 1 year, until their results were realized. Abdominoplasty recovery may seem daunting, but your vigilance will pay off with excellent results. Your patience is worth the wait!

Yes, regardless of your abdominoplasty surgery, the female body is quite extraordinary and will adapt to your developing new addition. There are no risk factors to consider, although your stomach muscles may feel tighter as the fascia, or tissue, stretches your abdominal skin and muscles. This can cause skin redundancy which may require a touch-up procedure to achieve pre-pregnancy results. We encourage patients to wait to have a tummy tuck until you are done having children to avoid additional surgeries in the same region.

Yes, many patients will combine adjunct procedures when undergoing tummy tuck surgery. Dr. Jaiswal does perform some liposuction during your tummy tuck; however, full body sculpting is more robust and can be added to your abdominoplasty. Other common procedures to consider pairing with your tummy tuck procedure is a breast augmentation, breast lift, or breast reduction surgery. When adding a breast procedure to abdominoplasty surgery it is referred to as a mommy makeover which is designed to restore and rejuvenate a woman’s figure to their pre-pregnancy body.

Immediately following your tummy tuck surgery Dr. Jaiswal will instruct you to walk for 10 minutes every hour, while awake. Patients should continue walking hourly for 4 to 10 weeks. During this time, our medical team, headed by board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Rohit Jaiswal, MD, will continually evaluate your recovery and may recommend additional strength training and cardiovascular exercise like weight training, sit ups, crunches, planks, elliptical, treadmill, and stationary bike. We encourage patients to focus on exceptional form during and after the recovery process while performing these exercises and activities.

Lifting instructions vary by patient; depending upon the extent of your tummy tuck surgery and subsequent recovery, you can expect to be weak post procedure. It will take approximately 8 to 10 weeks before you regain full strength, but you may be able to hold your baby a little bit after just 2 weeks. General lifting restrictions for 10lbs to 20lbs are advised for 2 to 3 weeks. Lifting a baby out of their crib can be harmful to patients who have undergone abdominoplasty surgery if done too soon.

No, this is a normal sensation as your body has experienced significant trauma from surgery. Most patients present soreness and tightness in their mid-section following abdominoplasty surgery. Patients have also reported walking hunched over and cannot stand for extended periods of time during the first 2 weeks of their recovery. It’s critical to stay active for brief periods of time throughout the stages of recovery, but it’s just as important not to overdo it too. This means no heavy lifting, long periods on your feet, and exaggerated movements. The recovery period is a chance to rest and relax and will expedite the healing process and maximize outcomes.
