What is Photorejuvenation?

By harnessing the power of light, or photorejuvenation, there will be a more youthful looking reflection in the mirror in no time at all. Photorejuvenation is also referred to as a photofacial or fotofacial. Using a cosmetic technology known as intense pulsed light or IPL, which was originally associated with laser hair removal, photorejuvenation treats pigmentation issues and stimulates the cells responsible for collagen, resulting in smoother tone and plumper skin.

Benefits of Photorejuvenation

Photorejuvenation does not require the use of needles or chemicals to make your skin look beautiful and bright, making it a wonderful option for most people. You may choose photorejuvenation if you are looking for the following benefits:

  • Diminished fine lines and wrinkles
  • More even skin tone and less hyperpigmentation
  • Smoother, softer texture
  • Shrunken pores
  • Reduced appearance of freckles and sunspots
  • Relief from skin conditions like rosacea
  • Diminished appearance of broken blood vessels

How Does Photorejuvenation Work?

As mentioned earlier, photorejuvenation works by sending high intensity bands of light out to penetrate the layers of skin. The controlled pulses of light reach the deepest layers, where the most damaged cells are found. Photorejuvenation seeks out patches of darker pigment caused by broken blood vessels and sun damage while boosting the health of the surrounding skin.

Additionally, specific wavelengths can be dialed into the device for precise treatment of a myriad of skin conditions, including acne and rosacea.

Is Photorejuvenation Right For You?

Some groups are better suited for the treatment than others. People with lighter skin tones and skin elasticity tend to have better results. Wrinkles, age spots, hyperpigmentation, and acne scars are easily addressed with this method. Scientific studies have proven the effectiveness of photorejuvenation for treating mild to severe acne.

Individuals who have tan or darker skin tones may not see the desired results. In fact, there is a higher risk of people with darker skin developing blisters or burns as a result of IPL.

What to Expect During Photorejuvenation

Photorejuvenation is a non-invasive procedure that is done in-office and carried out by skilled technicians. Before the session, you will be asked to avoid medicines like aspirin or ibuprofen, to protect yourself from sunburn, and to keep your skin cool and dry.

During the appointment, you will be made as comfortable as possible. To keep your eyes safe from the intense light, goggles or an eye mask will be provided. Depending on your pain tolerance, numbing creams may also be used. Photorejuvenation is not painful for most, but some people find it uncomfortable. It feels a little like getting hit by a rubber band.

Once you are settled, your friendly technician will adjust the wavelength of light to meet your skin type. Each session takes about 15-20 minutes. Three sessions are suggested for maximum effectiveness.

Following the procedure, you will want to avoid anything that will increase the temperature of your skin, including hot showers, saunas, and direct sun exposure. A huge plus is that you can leave the office and go right back to your day. Zero downtime is a wonderful thing.

Are There Any Side Effects to Photorejuvenation?

  • Other options like microdermabrasion often come with side effects. Photorejuvenation has very few in comparison! Following the procedure and potentially for a few days afterward, you may experience some of the following effects:

    • Redness – fades within a few hours
    • Swelling – should be minor and can be treated with an ice pack
    • Brown spots – these are temporary but may last up to a week while your skin heals
    • Blisters – a small chance your skin may blister, but these disappear quickly
    • Crusting – dark spots will sometimes dry up and get flaky
