There are two ways that laser skin rejuvenation can be performed—with an ablative laser, which removes skin from the top layer, or a non-ablative laser, which stimulates growth in the deeper layers of skin. With either method, an intense beam of light is pointed at your skin. The laser is used to heat up the targeted area, either stimulating or removing cells.

What to Expect From a Laser Skin Rejuvenation Session

On the day of your appointment, our team will get you checked in and comfortable. During that time, ask us any questions you may have. You’re in good hands with us.

Our technicians will prep the equipment, select the correct wavelength on the laser, and then start your laser skin rejuvenation and resurfacing session. Sometimes, we may have to use a local anesthetic to relieve discomfort. Wrinkles, scars, spotting, discoloration, and other visible signs of aging will be targeted throughout the session. Depending on how much skin is treated at one time, your appointment may last a few hours.

Pre-Treatment Tips

Avoid heavy exposure to sun and skip tanning for at least four weeks prior to your treatment.
Skip deep skin procedures—dermabrasion, chemical peels, for example—for at least 4 weeks.
If you have a history of viral breakouts or shingles, let your doctor know and take any prescribed anti-viral medication 2-3 days before your appointment.
You may be asked to apply a retinoid to your skin for a few weeks.

Post-Treatment Tips

A non-stick dressing will need to be applied to the treated areas for about 24 hours.
Cleanse the treated areas 2-5 times a day using saline or a diluted vinegar solution. The DrSkin team will provide you with instructions.
Keep an ointment on the treated areas to prevent scabbing.
After your treated areas have healed, avoid oil-based cosmetics.

Is There Any Downtime?

There is some downtime, depending on the type of laser used and what has been treated. Generally, you will have about 7-10 days of downtime. Your skin will need some time to heal and will be vulnerable to sun exposure.

Who is a Candidate For Laser Skin Rejuvenation?

Laser skin rejuvenation and resurfacing is not meant to deal with minor skin blemishes. Instead, it focuses on moderate or severe blemishes, such as deep wrinkles and hyperpigmentation. Sun-damaged skin, scarring, and enlarged glands can also be dealt with using laser skin rejuvenation.
