Earlobe Reduction | Otoplasty | Gilbert, AZ | DrSkin Med Spa
As a key facial feature, your ears can either accentuate your aesthetic or gain attention for the wrong reasons. If you’re embarrassed by protruding, genetically large, or stretched earlobes, learn about our in-office ear rejuvenation options at DrSkin Plastic Surgery, Regenerative, and Medical Spa in Gilbert, AZ. The head of our surgical department is Dr. Rohit Jaiswal, who has earned the title of Top 100 Board-Certified Plastic Surgeons three years in a row, delivers natural-looking, youthful, and aesthetically pleasing earlobes that are balanced with the rest of your facial features.
What Is Earlobe Reduction?
Earlobe reduction is an outpatient procedure that corrects the appearance of sagging, stretched, damaged, or distorted earlobes. Unlike otoplasty, which is usually performed on individuals with congenital ear defects, earlobe reduction surgery, medically referred to as loboplasty, is recommended for individuals with ears that have changed as part of the aging process.
Gravity, collagen loss, heavy earrings, accidental trauma as well as natural signs of aging can all contribute to earlobes taking on a drooping or stretched appearance. Continued cartilage growth is another factor that can affect the appearance of the ears, causing them to grow larger over time. To restore proportionate ear contours, Dr. Jaiswal will remove a portion of excess tissue from each ear, and then carefully reshape the earlobes.
What Is Otoplasty?
Prominent, protruding, or misshapen ears are a common source of teasing and bullying, especially during early childhood and even into adulthood. These damaging comments can significantly lower a person’s self-confidence, causing depression and social anxiety. Otoplasty, or ear remodeling or ear pinning, is a procedure that aims to reshape overly large or protruding ears, ensuring they complement your appearance and harmonize with your other facial features.
Many people with ears that stick out are born with an underdeveloped antihelical fold, the bottom portion of the fold in your inner earlobe, or they have too much cartilage in the bowl portion of the earlobe, also called the concha. Infants born with protruding ears can receive treatment with ear reshaping molds if the parents decide to address the issue before they’re two months old. After that, a child will typically need to wait to have ear reshaping surgery until they are 5 to 7 years of age when the cartilage is structurally stable enough to receive surgery.
In addition to protruding ears, people may choose to have their ears reshaped to:
- Reduce the size of overly large ears
- Aesthetically enhance the shape of the earlobes
- Achieve more evenly proportioned ears
- Correct other congenital ear deformities
- Address ears that are deformed from an accident or injury
- Repair a torn earlobe
- Improve self-confidence

Your clinician will lead you to a private treatment room to discuss your concerns, educate you on the details of ear reshaping surgery, and answer any questions or concerns regarding your preferred surgery. The clinician will then take photographs, review your expected recovery and surgical fees, and answer any final questions. The provider will then share your photos with Dr. Jaiswal, who will determine your candidacy for ear reshaping and finalize the cost of your treatment.
Your clinician will then contact you with feedback from Dr. Jaiswal and will discuss the next steps. Once you’ve agreed to move forward, a formal quote will be provided, and a second consultation will be scheduled between you and Dr. Jaiswal to explore your surgery in more detail.
The Best Candidates for Ear Reshaping Surgery
Good candidates for ear reshaping surgery in Arizona at DrSkin Med Spa are those who want to enhance their appearance and bring harmony to their facial features.
Patients who are unhappy with protruding, unnaturally large, elongated, or damaged ears or earlobes due to genetics, injury, heavy jewelry, or aging are excellent candidates. The goal of ear reshaping surgery is to give patients a new sense of self-confidence by creating a more flattering ear contour.
Ideal patients are those who are in good mental and physical health and want to boost their self-esteem and overall appearance by embarking on this life-changing surgery. To determine whether ear reshaping surgery is right for you, our team of medical experts, including Dr. Jaiswal, will give you their professional opinion and guide you through an important decision-making process.
Earlobe Reshaping | Otoplasty Surgery
Both earlobe reduction and otoplasty are performed as in-office procedures accomplished using local anesthesia.
On the day of your procedure, you will arrive at DrSkin Med Spa, where you will be greeted by our welcoming coordinator or clinician and taken to a private treatment room. Then, Dr. Jaiswal will meet with you to review the details of your procedure. He will use a special pen to mark your ears to ensure proper placement of the incisions.
As Dr. Jaiswal marks your skin, he will discuss his approach to your surgery, including how much skin and cartilage will be removed, where he will make the incisions, the type of sutures he will use, any expected discomfort, and review your post-operative instructions for your recovery. He will also review his plan for local anesthesia.Â
Once the surgical area is thoroughly prepared, Dr. Jaiswal will administer the local anesthetic and begin the surgical process. An earlobe reduction surgery generally requires half an hour to one hour to complete. However, otoplasty procedures can take anywhere from 90 mins to 2 hours to complete depending on the extent of the surgery. Once your procedure is complete, your incisions are closed, and you will be free to go home with a caretaker as you will not be able to drive yourself.
Earlobe Reduction | Otoplasty Surgery Recovery
A few days prior to your procedure, Dr. Jaiswal will call in all your prescriptions to your preferred pharmacy and confirm that you have your medications.
Patients can return home the same day as their procedure, often one to two hours after their surgery is complete. Recovery takes approximately 3 to 14 days, although this varies by patient. You may experience mild swelling and bruising that lasts 7 to 10 days. Dr. Jaiswal requires patients to wear a terry cloth headband, except when showering, but also when sleeping. He asks patients to wear their headband for 2 to 4 weeks, depending on the specifics of their case. With dedication to our patients’ safety, health, and the success of their procedures, we are extremely hands-on and attentive during the entire recovery period to ensure the best possible outcomes.
Patients can usually enjoy their final results after healing is complete, which is usually after 4 to 6 weeks of recovery. Any scarring is well-concealed either behind the ear (otoplasty) or within the natural creases and folds of the ears (earlobe reduction) and will continue to fade within a year.

Frequently Asked Questions—Earlobe Reduction | Otoplasty
What does ear reshaping surgery do?
An earlobe reduction or otoplasty surgery repairs sagging, damaged, or protruding ears. The procedure aims to contour the ears by either removing excess skin and cartilage or pinning the ears into a more aesthetically pleasing position near the patient’s head.
Am I a good candidate for ear reshaping surgery?
Patients struggling with self-esteem and self-confidence issues associated with the appearance of their ears should seek counsel from a board-certified plastic surgeon to determine their candidacy for an earlobe reduction or otoplasty procedure. As with all surgery, there are many criteria that factor into determining eligibility and consideration for a specific procedure. At DrSkin Med Spa, our expert medical team, led by Dr. Rohit Jaiswal, MD, will determine patient candidacy during the consultation process. He will use several criteria to assess, provide insight and feedback, and make his final determination, which includes facial anatomy and structure, patient concerns and complaints, lifestyle, and aesthetic goals. Dr. Jaiswal is a board-certified plastic surgeon with over 16 years of surgical training and experience and excellence and will determine if ear reshaping is the best option for you.
Can I still wear jewelry after an earlobe reduction?
Yes, in time, after recovery from surgery, you can wear earrings in your earlobes again. However, we do encourage our patients to take extra precautions to avoid undesired stretching or accidental trauma to their earlobes, such as wearing lightweight earrings, removing clothing carefully when wearing long earrings, removing earrings before bed, and avoiding tight, heavy clip-ons.
What should I expect after an otoplasty/earlobe reduction surgery?
Generally speaking, patients can expect bruising, inflammation, and swelling for the first 1 to 2 weeks following surgery. Swelling and inflammation will typically peak 48 hours post-surgery and continue improving daily until the condition subsides completely. Cold compresses help mitigate and resolve some swelling and discoloration from bruising. Patients can expect to sleep on their back in an elevated position, at a 30- to 45-degree incline, for the first 2 to 4 weeks during recovery to help minimize swelling and promote healing. Most patients return to sedentary work after two weeks. If your job requires heavy lifting and strenuous activity, it’s important to consult your plastic surgeon before returning to work. Light exercises may begin or resume at approximately the 4-week mark but try to avoid activities that could potentially cause trauma to the ears. After 8 to 12 weeks, patients may engage in more strenuous exercise and social activities but should be cleared by their plastic surgeon first.
What is the best age to get an ear reshaping procedure?
Parents with young children who want to address this issue early must ensure that their child is at least 5 to 7 years old, or when the cartilage of the ears is more stable. However, there is no age limit on having an ear reshaping procedure. Genetics, skin quality, and overall health are all factors in determining candidacy, but none are age-dependent for surgical consideration. The ultimate criteria for being considered a viable candidate is how you feel about your ears. If you’re struggling with self-confidence and self-esteem issues, then it may be time to consider a surgical option and consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon, regardless of age.
