Age Spots

Age spots have a variety of different names, including; liver spots, dark spots, or sun spots. However, they aren’t related to the liver, and the marks are a result of sun damage.

They can appear anywhere on the body due to the skin’s melanin-producing reaction to too much exposure to the sun. Spots vary in size and color and are frequently found on the face and hands as they are more at risk for greater sun exposure.

At DrSkin we know these unsightly blemishes can be a real eyesore. That’s why we invested in the most cutting edge technology, peels, and therapies to remove, restore, and renew your skin’s natural tone and texture.

How Does DRSKIN Help With Age Spots?

Those freckles that show up on your skin over the years, the ones known as age spots, don’t have to be a sign of aging gracefully. Erase those age spots with cutting edge technology, chemical peels, laser treatments, and more at DrSkin. We want you to be proud of the skin you’re in.

Age Spots Custom Treatments

Age spots, also known as liver spots, sun spots, solar lentigines, and senile lentigo, are the result of sun damage. Although age spots can form at any age, even on children, they are most common in those who are middle aged or in older adulthood. Although age spots are not cancerous, they may make you feel self-conscious.

You are most likely to develop sun spots in places like:

  • Your face
  • Backs of your hands
  • Upper back
  • Shoulders
  • Forearms

What Do Age Spots Look Like?

Age spots look like freckles, although the size and shape of these blemishes can be large or small. Here is a look at some of the characteristics of age spots:

  • Color: Age spots have a range of colors, including brown, gray, and black. The more time you spend in the sun, the darker these spots may become.
  • Shape: Most age spots are oval or round and have defined edges.
  • Size: Age spots can be as small as a freckle or around an inch in diameter.
  • Texture: Unlike moles caused by sun exposure, age spots are not raised above the skin. They will feel the same—flat and painless—as the rest of your skin.
  • Grouping: Age spots can appear alone or in a group. The more age spots you have, the more noticeable they become.

Some moles may look like age spots. If you are unsure about a mark on your skin, it is highly recommended that you visit a dermatologist for a professional opinion.

How Are Age Spots Treated at DrSkin?

Although age spots are not detrimental to your health, you may not like the way they look and want them to disappear. The good news is that it is possible to erase age spots from your skin, turning back the clock, so to speak. Also, you can purchase skin care products that prevent new ones from forming, such as skin-lightening creams.

At DrSkin, we have a wide variety of treatments designed to help you banish age spots and get a softer, unblemished complexion. Here are some of the options that we offer:

Intense Pulsed Light Therapy

This treatment uses pulses of light that pass through the skin, targeting melanin, and breaking up any age spots. Although there may be some redness post-treatment, there is zero downtime involved. IPL therapy is gentle on most skin types and is highly effective at diminishing the appearance of age spots on the face and other areas.

Laser Resurfacing

Similar to IPL therapy, laser resurfacing uses wavelengths of light on the skin. With laser resurfacing, melanin in the targeted area is safely destroyed. Only one or two sessions may be required to successfully remove dark spots. You can also use laser resurfacing for acne, scars, and hyperpigmentation.

Chemical Peels

Another option is to have a chemical peel. With chemical peels, the outer skin is removed, and so the lighter age spots may disappear immediately. Chemical peels do require some downtime, due to redness and possible skin irritation. At DrSkin, we use a variety of chemical peels, including less abrasive options that improve the smoothness of your skin.

That said, chemical peels are not for everyone. The team at DrSkin will help you decide which age spot treatment is right for you.

Dermaplaning

Similar to dermabrasion, dermaplaning is less aggressive. A specialist at DrSkin scrapes away the topmost layer of skin, removing dead cells and peach fuzz. A dermaplaning treatment is quick, around 30 minutes, and does not require downtime. The layer of skin underneath is healthier, smoother, and will absorb skincare products more easily after healing.

We also offer dermabrasion services to aid with age spots.

Microneedling

In this procedure, ultra-fine needles are pressed into the skin, opening microscopic holes. Your body responds to this by producing collagen and elastin. During the healing process, your age spots may lighten. Other skin damage may also improve, providing you with a youthful glow.
